JOB DESCRIPTION
Privacy Counsel
As Privacy Counsel, you will join the privacy lawyers in our General Counsel's Office to provide legal advice on data privacy matters, respond to potential data incidents and data subject requests, analyze vendor relationships and negotiate vendor contracts, and provide legal support for privacy compliance activities.
Among your responsibilities:
- Analyzing privacy risk, compliance and contractual issues and counseling business leaders with respect to proposed business projects and vendor services
- Conducting data privacy assessments, including privacy impact assessments and HIPAA assessments
- Providing practical legal advice regarding dynamic data protection laws and regulations, including the GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and HIPAA
- Collecting and maintaining information on data assets, data flows, and business processes that use personal data
- Evaluating and responding to potential data incidents and data subject requests
- Negotiating data privacy agreements with vendors, clients and other third parties
- Participating in strategic planning, design, and policy development related to data management and privacy
- Updating privacy notices, internal policies, templates and forms
- Developing and conducting internal data privacy training
- Coordinating with, and managing, outside counsel
Location:
RSM has offices in more than 90 locations throughout the US, Canada, India and El Salvador. Preferred office locations for this position include Chicago, Iowa City or Cedar Rapids.
Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
- J.D. and bar admission required
- 4+ years of experience practicing data privacy law in a law firm or in-house setting
- Excellent strategic problem-solving capabilities, with a focus on how to improve processes and efficiency
- Team player, able to communicate and coordinate effectively across departments and functions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills - ability to create clear and professional documentation and communications to different audiences (tech, business, legal)
- Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and able to work independently and take ownership of projects and solutions
Positive attitude and willing to tackle wide range of routine to complex projects in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
Preferred experience/attributes include (but not required):
- Experience with incident response and data mapping tools, such as OneTrust
- Knowledge of Canadian privacy laws
- Experience in professional services, especially tax, accounting, and audit CIPT, CIPP, CIPM, CISSP, or similar certifications
