Overview

The AVP Associate Counsel provides counsel and guidance regarding legal matters of the corporation to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within state and federal limits. This team member provides legal work in the defense of the corporation against suits or claims and/or provides counsel on human resource issues, governmental regulations and contractual agreements of the company.

Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES

  • Provide legal counsel and guidance to corporate personnel in various activities to protect the Corporation's interests from a legal perspective and prevent legal disputes from occurring
  • Ensure Corporate compliance with all relevant Federal, State and local laws, regulations and ordinances
  • Assist senior attorneys in the management of outside counsel hired to obtain legal opinions or handle claims and litigation
  • Prepare and/or review existing and intended contracts, leases, formal agreements and other legal instruments to safeguard the Corporation's interests
  • Assist in research, review, analysis, drafting and approval of various documents, policies, procedures and obligations to which the Company is or may become a party
  • Coordinate the prosecution of Corporate lawsuits Research and produce evidence required in claims by and against Organization
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the law in areas of special interest to the Company
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Conform with all company policies and procedures



Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Broad knowledge of a wide variety of legal standards affecting a publicly held corporation engaging in consumer retail and finance operations
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research
  • Working knowledge of consumer finance laws
  • Understanding of auto finance
  • Understanding of various legal research software and word processing software packages (eg, Lexis, Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Proficient knowledge of corporate files
  • Proficiency with online regulatory licensing systems (eg, NMLS, NIPR, national banking departments, online systems) for each Secretary of State

  • Knowledge of administrative and judicial procedures and the rules of evidence


Skills

  • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment
  • Analytical ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with corporate personnel, customers and contractors
  • Must be able to work independently and able to use computerized research tools
  • Ability to coordinate the preparation and trying of judicial and administrative cases before, local, State and Federal administrative tribunals
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Effective communication skills including oral, written and presentation
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex legal documents to protect the corporation's interest


Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree JD from an accredited law school required


Experience

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience required
  • admitted to practice law in minimum of one state required
