About the team:

Robinhood is looking for a highly qualified Associate General Counsel, Employment and Ethics to join its innovative legal department. In this role, you will be a point person responsible for the management of complex employment and ethics matters involving the company.

What you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead global employment and ethics initiatives by providing practical and risk based advice to company leaders
  • Be a trusted partner and advisor to the Employee Relations and People teams by providing employment law counselling, advice and strategy with respect to multiple locations in the US and abroad
  • Guide People Team and senior managers on crucial conversations including employee terminations, performance management, business reorganizations, investigations of employees' misconduct and/or policy violations
  • Partner with leaders across the company on a broad range of business and legal projects including M&A diligence, FLSA reviews, employee benefits, compensation, physical and IT security, immigration, recruiting, tax, ethics and compliance and diversity and inclusion efforts.   
  • Partner with Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk, Compliance and/or Security teams to conduct and ensure timely completion of investigations, remediation plans and implement appropriate remediation where appropriate. 
  • Develop and deliver training and communications programs to educate employees and management and promote ethical and compliant culture.
  • Utilize employment dispute resolution strategies and develop the infrastructure required to prevent disputes from arising
  • Educate and advise management, technical and business partners on employment issues and risks; develop and coordinate company trainings
  • Supervise and lead strategy on litigation and pre-litigation employment disputes; hands-on role in coordinating and advising case strategy, including discovery, drafting and editing briefs, internal investigations, interviewing and preparing witnesses and negotiations with third parties
  • Draft policies, standards and business procedures crafted to foster compliance with various state and international employment laws and regulations
  • Lead Ethics Office monitoring and managing critical policies, employee inquiries, and conflicts of interest.  
  • Negotiate, review and draft critical documents such as separation agreements, IP agreements, new hire onboarding, and other related agreements and policies

About you:

  • JD degree from an ABA accredited university
  • Must be a member in good standing of a state Bar
  • Minimum of 15+ years relevant employment experience in a law firm and corporate law department required, including both counseling and litigation
  • Substantive knowledge of employment law
  • Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills; outstanding business judgment, strategic thinking and ability to provide practical advice by balancing business needs with legal risks
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with, and gain the respect of, partners at all levels and functions of the company
  • Experience managing other attorneys and paralegals
  • Comfortable delegating work among team members or performing work themselves 
  • Ability to find appropriate balance between legal risks and the needs of the business
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, balance many matters at once and quickly shift from one situation or task to another
  • Ability to work under pressure with a sense of humor

Bonus points:

  • Prior in-house experience with a public company and/or experience working with high technology and financial services companies preferred
  • Experience with class action litigation and/or supporting Ethics and Compliance Programs are also a plus
  • Knowledge of financial services preferred
