This internship position is focused exclusively on Sustainability Programs in workplace operations. This internship position will play a critical role in designing and building our global Workplace Sustainability operations program. Reporting to the Senior Director, Global Project Management & Workplace Sustainability, you will work collaboratively across the global Workplace team. You will also partner closely with Okta’s Director of ESG & Sustainability to ensure alignment with Okta’s broader corporate Sustainability program. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Research current global workplace operations programs and provide recommendations by working with internal teams to identify sustainability opportunities for waste, food, water and energy (at a minimum) consumption
  • Develop cost/benefit analysis and prioritization of the identified opportunities 
  • Maintain completeness and accuracy of utility data, property data, etc. in databases to ensure consistency and accuracy of reporting.
  • Teamwork – Participate on Energy Team process improvement projects. Actively communicate progress to the portfolio program manager, the facilities management team and the client.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategy and Performance – Create a roadmap for Okta’s Workplace Sustainability program specific for the Workplace Operations program. Develop Operations (waste and recycling separation, energy and water use etc.) focused Workplace Sustainability program, including strategy, implementation plans, measurement and timelines; collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders, including Finance, Workplace, Employee Experience, and Social Impact to align priorities to Okta’s broader corporate sustainability initiatives.
  • Measurement, Evaluation and Reporting – Apply relevant standards and frameworks (e.g. SASB, GRI, SDGs) to Okta’s Workplace environmental sustainability efforts; use data, benchmarks and insights from LEED, WELL and BREAM standards to evaluate Okta’s performance; own reporting and tracking for environmental sustainability across Okta’s Workplace function; partner with Director of ESG and Sustainability on annual disclosures such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Okta’s own ESG reporting; Demonstrate how proposed policies and procedures benefit the overall triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) and create net positive impacts, articulating expected results and costs. ·    
  • Operations and Cross-Functional Management – Lead cross-functional Workplace sustainability initiatives, along with managers and departments by identifying, leading and coordinating programs and plans; partner with Finance to manage near- and long-term financial planning for Workplace Sustainability programs; effectively manage teams of outside partners, consultants and vendors toward outcomes and results. Lead and coordinate efforts to set goals and adopt new programs, track the impacts of changes in operations, lead internal audits (waste and recycling separation, energy and water use etc.), and celebrate successes. 
  • Communications – Develop the overall narrative for Okta’s Workplace Sustainability efforts; represent Okta externally with relevant industry coalitions and internally to Okta employees where appropriate. This includes managing the internal communications through the Workplace Sustainability website.

Qualifications

  • Currently has, or is in process of obtaining a BS or MS in Environmental Management, or equivalent degrees
  • Experience working across cross-functional teams, resolving issues, building consensus, and working towards agreements
  • Prior experience managing sustainability, environmental, and/or carbon footprinting programs and initiatives.
  • Proficient in using Google Suite, and MS Excel to combine and analyze data from various sources, and generate reports and graphics. Must be able to combine large volumes of data for consolidated reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent time management, project management, and follow-through.
  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to work across multiple departments and units within an organization.
