Launched in 2005 and currently supported by Effective Leadership Academy (ELA), the Science Internship Program focuses on learning opportunities that gives high school students the opportunity to work and learn alongside Cleveland Clinic caregivers in a variety of clinical fields and careers within healthcare.

During this six-week virtual paid internship, high school students from the Ohio counties of Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Summit will have the opportunity to work in a hybrid (in-person and/or virtual) internship experience and learn alongside caregivers at Cleveland Clinic. Students spend their first week participating in virtual workshops focused on leadership, work preparedness, and financial literacy that will prepare students for success in the program, in life and in their eventual careers, and the following five weeks working in assigned clinical focused departments of Cleveland Clinic. Examples could include fields such as Behavior Health Laboratory Medicine (lab tech; pathology; phlebotomy) Nursing Care (PCNA; RN; LPN; APP/CNP; PA) Physician (primary care; internal medicine; pediatrics; family practice) Public Health Radiology (rad tech) Respiratory Care Research (research focus).

Program Requirements:• Be at least 15 years of age by June 1, 2022• Be in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade at the time of application• Have a preferred current cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 scale• Will be required to comply with the COVID-19 vaccine program or have an exemption• Live and attend school in one of the following Northeast Ohio Counties: Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina or Summit• Be a U.S. Citizen, non-citizen national, or legal permanent resident• Demonstrate a strong interest in the sciences and an expressed interest in a clinical focused healthcare career

Under the direction of their assigned supervisor (mentor), participates in a structured virtual paid learning experience. Will perform a variety of administrative tasks, complete work on one major project/research project and assist on a variety of projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists department personnel in assigned administrative, planning, organizational, technical, and professional tasks.
  • Responsible for completion of work on one major project/research project as assigned by supervisor (mentor/co-mentor).
  • Provides suggestions or recommendations with regard to department specific projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education:

  • Current high school enrollment. Must have successfully completed at least the 9th grade prior to the start of the Cleveland Clinic student intern program.


Certifications:

  • None required.


Complexity of Learning Experience:

  • Can discuss and weigh pros and cons and separate critical issues.
  • Can make definitive choices, expresses opinions on issues and can explain logical path decisions.


Work Experience:

  • None required.


Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling/lifting items, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires frequent standing and sitting.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.


Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
