Come intern with our Legal team

Our Legal team is dedicated to supporting Karat’s people, solving complex problems with both a business and a legal mindset, and serving as a strategic partner across every function in our dynamic organization. Two of Karat’s legal team members are Stanford alumni: Ibrahim Elshamy (Head of Legal) and Laura Tong (Lead Counsel, Commercial and Product).

What you will do

Our 1L summer internship is a full time, paid 8-week summer program that provides first-year law students with the opportunity to intern with Karat’s tight-knit in-house legal team. This intern will work on a wide variety of needs facing a technology startup company across areas such as commercial contracts, corporate governance, intellectual property, employment, marketing, other legal matters, and partnership with other internal departments. Karat’s in-house lawyers will mentor this intern with regular feedback to gain a better understanding of the unique role of an in-house legal department at a dynamic, hypergrowth technology startup company.

Karat’s HQ is based in Seattle, Washington; however, this internship is fully remote.

Some potential projects would include (for illustrative purposes only):

  • Participating in the negotiation and markup of commercial contracts.
  • Assisting with the development of policies, training materials, checklists and guidelines in a variety of practice areas including data privacy law.
  • Collaborating with different internal departments, such as finance or information security, to align cross-department operations to meet combined objectives.
  • Investigating and strategizing responses to potential copyright infringement matters.
  • Researching best practices in labor and employment law on a variety of topics, such as disability accommodations.
  • Preparing media assets for internal and external consumption that distill complex legal topics into a format that is understood by a non-technical audience.
  • Analyzing novel issues that are raised across the organization and developing clear and concise internal memoranda to summarize the issue, potential solutions, and recommendation.

Internship term requirements

  • This internship is limited to first year JD law students.
  • Commitment to 8 to 10 consecutive weeks during the summer (flexibility on start/end dates).
  • Willing to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

The experience you will bring

  • There is no experience requirement – we encourage applicants who want to leverage their 1L summer to experience what an in-house legal role at a technology startup company is like and are drawn to Karat’s purpose to unlock opportunity
  • We particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds and/or those with a connection to the greater Seattle area (neither of which are requirements)
