Intern - START HBCU, Cyber Security RD Undergrad Summer

We are seeking an Intern - START HBCU, Cyber Security R&D Undergad Summer

The Securing Top Academic Research Talent at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (START HBCU) Institute is designed to provide research collaborations with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and to develop an intentional talent pipeline for minority students in STEM. We are interested in identifying candidates from HBCUs and growing collaboration opportunities between HBCUs and Sandia. A key part of this is through granting summer internships to undergraduate students to work at Sandia National Laboratories. The START HBCU Institute will hire interns into several critical mission areas for summer 2023.

As a Cyber Security Intern at Sandia, you will be guided by a technical mentor and work closely with a team of researchers and interns on issues of national significance.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Leverage your skills across numerous domains, including software/hardware development, data analysis and machine learning, reverse engineering, and machine and network virtualization.
  • Team with Sandia cybersecurity subject matter experts and fellow interns to solve real-world problems with real-world national security impact.

Posting Duration

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position.

Additional requirements:

  • Attendance at a Historically Black College/University during the spring 2023 academic term
  • Experience in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, C, C++, Java, Go, Perl, Ruby or R

Qualifications We Desire

  • Demonstrated knowledge in core computer science concepts (e.g. data structures and algorithms, databases, operating systems, computer networks)
  • Demonstrated knowledge in critical advanced computer science and cybersecurity topics (e.g. malware reverse engineering, machine learning and data science, virtualization, software defined networks, mobile device security and protocols)
  • Scholarship for Service Recipient

The Emerging Technologies Security department delivers research and engineering support to US Government cybersecurity defense missions in the domains of cloud and mobile. By understanding and anticipating changes in information technology paradigms and how they are used by the nation's adversaries, the department delivers recommendations and capabilities that are timely and impactful. Department staff have broad expertise in the topics of software development, commercial cloud platform configuration and architecture, reference architecture design and implementation, software defined networking, virtualization and virtual machine introspection, mobile OS internals, broadband wireless protocols, software defined radio, protocol reverse engineering, and red teaming.

Security Clearance
