Intern II
The candidate will provide summer intern support for the Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Geophysics (HBG) contract at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.
The candidate intern will be employed to cross-validate the new NASA Global Water Monitor (GWM) lake extent products. There is an expectation that the intern will work during the summer of 2022 for approximately 7-10 weeks at no more than 40 hrs per week. The GREALM/GWM operational programs look to the monitoring of lake and reservoir water status to observe the status of water resources. The project mostly utilizes radar altimeters to measure surface water levels, but it has recently added a service that employs MODIS imagery to measure the changes in water body extent. These new lake extent products, created for a subset of large water bodies, will shortly be available on the GWM web portal for free global access. They are however, classed as preliminary, and there is a requirement for cross-validation exercises to examine their accuracy.
- The intern will access these extent products from the web portal and perform an all-sources cross-validation. Validation sources can include lake extents from:
aerial surveys,
other remote sensing databases or monitoring services (e.g., HYDROWEB, DAHITI, Copernicus, EUMETSET ECV, NASA/MEASURES/PO.DAAC, the Pekel/Donchyts portals),
published estimates (see catalog collected by previous intern Maureen Cribb) or iv) the water level products themselves via examining the regularity of the hypsometry. - Cross-validation results to be delivered to the project PI in either ppt or docx format.
- The candidate will be directly responsible for maintaining a positive and productive working relationship with NASA and/or external contractor entities as applicable.
Required Skills
Candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in at least one year Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.
- Project/Team Experience (ability to track assignments and ensure timely completion and delivery)
- Ability to work quickly, efficiently and accurately in a dynamic and fluid environment
- Ability to complete all required training/learning assignments
Candidate is preferred to have the following additional qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience in cross-validation, remote sensing and monitoring, research, examining and surveying water levels, and prior intern experience
- Experience with basic Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Additionally, the Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Publications, etc.

- Balancing mission needs
- Good judgment and Relationship management
