Internship Program at WM

Our Summer Internship Program at WM is a 12-week paid program focused on supporting your education with experiential learning. As a WM Intern, you will interact with and conduct various duties and responsibilities for one or more functional teams to develop new skills and learn new areas of the business. Interns gain practical experience, relevant to their field of study, prior to college graduation.

I. Job Summary

Interacts with and conducts various duties and responsibilities for one or more functional teams in order to develop new skills and learn new areas of the business. Interns gain practical experience, relevant to their field of study, prior to college graduation.

Digital - Cybersecurity Governance

Intern will participate in Cybersecurity Governance processes and tasks. One key process is WM's Cybersecurity risk assessment process which evaluates third-party vendors against NIST frameworks (NIST CSF and NIST 800-53v4). Intern will learn applicable NIST controls and WM's risk assessment repository, review historic assessments, and process risk assessments through an entire lifecycle.

Time will also be dedicated to other cybersecurity governance functions including data protection, security architecture, and vulnerability management.

Intern will be working directly with Senior Cybersecurity personnel.

This position will be located at Houston corporate headquarters with a standard 40-hour workweek.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned and may vary by location.

  • Uses problem solving skills to determines problems and understand fundamental parts of the problem.
  • Conducts analysis as directed and prepares and delivers insights and recommendations based on analysis.
  • Synthesizes findings and draws conclusions from analyses and makes oral/written recommendations to supervisor and/or manager.
  • Executes tasks related to functional projects and/or process improvements.
  • Communicates issues and roadblocks related to areas of responsibility.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Interns must have a high school diploma or GED (accredited) and be pursuing a bachelor's degree (accredited) in Computer Science. Completed Course Work Hours: 60.0
  • Strong academic credentials (Minimum GPA of 3.00)
  • Experience: No prior work experience required.


B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Must be available to participate in the 12-week internship program from start to finish (Jun 1 - Aug 19, 2022)
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week/standard working hours
  • Must have completed at least one year of college and be enrolled as a college student in the fall of 2022


C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently while maintaining attention to detail
  • Able to be flexible and adapt to changing situations while remaining positive
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, collaborative team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word)
