About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as an Instrumentation Test Engineer

The SPARC Tokamak Instrumentation & Control Team seeks an instrumentation engineer to coordinate and execute laboratory scale testing of instruments and instrumentation integration components. Testing activities range from noise quantification, component mechanical integrity testing, and high voltage testing. The test engineer will need to develop a test plan, design fixtures and test articles, execute testing, and summarize test results. Candidates will be working with cryogenics systems, high voltage electrical, vacuum systems, and transient magnetic fields.

What you'll do:

  • Design of the instrumentation test fixtures and development of documentation for test readiness reviews
  • Iterate in 3D CAD on components and reviewing parts, assemblies, and drawings
  • Perform structural, thermal, and/or electrical analysis to inform test parameters
  • Formulate and conduct small scale testing to retire risk and incorporate findings into operations and commissioning scope
  • Collaborate with the lead instrumentation engineers to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the test design
  • Work with cryogenic fluids, vacuum systems, and high voltage equipment
  • Set up a local data acquisition system
  • Summarize test results and findings into reports

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
  • 2+ years of Test design and operation experience
  • Experience designing test fixtures, setting up data acquisition, and executing test

Bonus points for:

  • 2+ years of mechanical analysis experience
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience
  • 2+ years of mechanical design experience
  • 2+ years of electrical design experience
  • Mechanical CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Be familiar with interpreting codes and standards (e.g. BPVC/IPC/NASA)
  • GD&T
  • Familiarity with harsh environments (vacuum, high pressure, low temperature, high magnetic field, radiation)
  • FEM analysis tools (e.g. ANSYS. COMSOL)
  • Mechanical system prototyping experience (quick-turn solutions to check fit and function)
  • Set up of local data acquisition systems and associated electronics

Must have Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform extended activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call regularly
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics

What We Do

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. CFS is now building SPARC, the world's first commercially relevant, net energy fusion demonstration device. SPARC will pave the way for the first fusion power plant, ARC, that will produce power on the grid.

The ultimate mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change.
