Gray Residential is a multifamily owner-operator with a growing portfolio of communities across the Midwest. We manage our properties directly, which means our accounting function sits at the intersection of corporate finance and day-to-day property operations. We're looking for a Head of Accounting to own that function — someone with deep multifamily or real estate accounting experience, a CPA, and the ability to lead a team while staying close to the numbers.
This is a key leadership hire. The person in this role will have visibility into every dollar moving through the business and a direct line to ownership.
What this role actually is:
- You'll oversee all accounting operations for Gray Residential — both at the corporate level and across our property management portfolio. That means consolidating financials across multiple entities, managing the month-end close process, overseeing AP and AR, producing owner and investor reporting, and ensuring our books are accurate, timely, and audit-ready.
- On the property management side, you'll work closely with our RealPage-based accounting workflows — general ledger, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, and CAM reconciliations. You'll partner with our regional and operations teams to make sure property-level financials reflect reality and that variances are understood and explained.
- On the corporate side, you'll manage entity-level reporting across our LLC structure, coordinate with outside tax advisors, support investor reporting and capital account tracking, and own the budgeting and forecasting process alongside ownership.
- You'll report directly to ownership and be the senior accounting voice in the organization.
What we're looking for:
- CPA required. This is a non-negotiable — we need someone with the technical foundation and professional accountability that comes with it.
- They've done this in real estate. Multifamily or property management accounting experience is strongly preferred. They know how entity structures work, how to consolidate across properties, and how to produce reporting that owners and investors can actually use.
- They've led a team. This isn't a staff accountant role — you'll be managing people and owning the function. We need someone who can develop junior staff, manage workflow across the department, and hold the team to a high standard.
- They're strong with property management software. RealPage accounting experience is a significant plus. At minimum, they need to be comfortable in purpose-built real estate accounting platforms and able to get up to speed quickly.
- They're organized and deadline-driven. Month-end closes, investor distributions, tax prep timelines — this job runs on deadlines. We need someone who owns them, not just manages to them.
- They communicate well with non-accountants. Ownership and operators need to understand the numbers. You'll need to translate financials into clear, actionable information for people who aren't looking at a general ledger every day.
- 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 in a leadership or senior role.
What you can expect from us
- Direct access to ownership and a real seat at the table — this isn't a back-office function.
- A growing portfolio that will add complexity and scope to the role over time.
- Investment in the tools and systems needed to run accounting at a high level — we're actively improving our tech stack.
- Straight answers about comp, expectations, and how we measure success.
- If you're a CPA who's done real estate accounting at a serious level and wants to own the function at a growing multifamily operator — we'd like to talk.
