Summary:
Barr is seeking a senior geoenvironmental engineer with experience in tailings management to join its Calgary office. This person will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on large-scale tailings management field programs and associated engineering analysis and design for complex projects with industrial clients in the oil sands and/or other mining industries.
Project work will include providing technical leadership on large-scale tailings management field programs; conducting tailings studies and assessments; managing and providing technical leadership for engineering studies and multidisciplinary design projects (including conceptual, feasibility, front-end, and detailed design stages); regular client communication and interface; working with clients and staff to prepare plans and execution strategies; preparing cost estimates; preparing formal proposals; writing and managing delivery of technical reports; participating in business development initiatives and client management; mentoring junior staff; and performing other duties as assigned by the company. While the position is located in Calgary, periodic travel is required.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental, mining, geological, geotechnical, civil engineering, or a related discipline

10 or more years of work experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above

Professionally certified in Alberta (e.g., P. Eng.) or ability to be certified within one year

Experience in the execution of field programs

Knowledge and experience in tailings management in the mining sector, sediment transport/solid-water interactions, and mine reclamation and closure

Familiarity with environmental regulations

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients

Strong technical and problem-solving skills

A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with multidisciplinary teams of specialists to meet client and project needs

Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (project needs will vary seasonally and over time)

Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future

Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Master’s degree in geoenvironmental or mining engineering or a related discipline

Experience in numerical modelling of fine tailings geotechnical and/or flow behavior
-
Knowledge and experience in fluid fine tailings management within the oil sands industry, and mine waste management

Demonstrated project management and leadership skills and experience related to client management/interfacing as well as directing/mentoring junior professional staff

Knowledge and experience of industrial processes such as mining and/or minerals processing
-
Experience with business development or marketing of professional services
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.
NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in remote locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction and mining sites and to enter and work in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.
