The role will provide controllership, technical expertise and fiduciary leadership to an evolving accounting organization. This team member will be instrumental in raising the bar on our ability to support the business and our fiduciary responsibilities. The new Senior Manager will be responsible for researching, developing and writing technical accounting policies for the accounting organization. He/She will work with functional teams to understand the impact of newly issued accounting literature and/or business initiatives and create processes to ensure compliance and operational excellence are achieved.
This role will report to one of the Accounting Directors in the organization. Primary responsibilities include liaising with Amazon on technical accounting matters, documenting significant unusual transactions, determining accounting treatment for equity investments, and partnering with functional teams to understand operational changes and related accounting impacts. This team member will establish strong internal partnerships with WFM functional accounting team leaders and with our partners at Amazon, including members of the Amazon controllership function.
For this position, Whole Foods Market seeks a highly skilled and experienced person with a minimum of 7+ years of progressive accounting experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience applying technical accounting guidance to existing processes. This position will be based in Austin, TX.

Responsibilities:

  • As a subject matter expert, work with the business and others in the organization to identify, resolve and document complex accounting issues and pending transactions.
  • Advanced understanding of SEC reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of all significant accounting transactions, research and implementation of relevant accounting technical standards, and preparation of technical accounting memos supporting all accounting positions.
  • Coordinate and effectively communicate with various teams throughout the company and all levels of management regarding accounting issues.
  • Confers with external auditors on various transactions; documents transactions and decisions.
  • Drives continuous process improvements to mitigate risks throughout the organization.
  • Monitors standard-setters for latest accounting regulations, analyzes impact of new/emerging regulations on the company and proactively develops policy to address standard adoption and implementation.
  • Partner with business development to help structure, as needed, and account for equity investments.
  • Partner with other accounting departments and Amazon accounting policy team in implementing new accounting standards.
  • Partner with cross-functional Team Leaders to identify areas to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, committed to quality and rapid response.
  • Challenge and understand financial information so that issues are resolved, and financial results are properly recorded and presented.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Accounting experience – solid technical accounting knowledge in many of the following areas: inventory; property, plant and equipment; leasing; impairment; equity investments; and construction accounting.
  • CPA
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, prioritize quickly, organize team dynamics and deliver results.
  • Ability to interpret and convey complex accounting guidance to non-accountants.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, often ambiguous and rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to present to senior leadership.
  • Experience building strong collaborative relationships of trust and confidence with senior corporate leaders, operating business leaders, influencers, and partners throughout the company and the retail industry.
  • Ability to influence change in a decentralized working environment.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong emphasis on servant leadership and listening skills.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; positively and productively impact strategic and tactical initiatives.
  • Ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, changing environment and anticipate future needs.

  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Big 4 public accounting experience
  • Experience with BPC consolidation and reporting tools.
  • Experience with Workday consolidation and reporting tools.
  • Experience with Oracle Financial Applications and/or Hyperion Financial Management consolidation and reporting tools.
  • Retail industry experience a plus.
