The Senior Manager, Accounting will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks associated with transactional operations and accounting within the Accounting Organization.  Responsibilities include managing the core accounting functions for Fixed Assets and Capitalized Software as well as Payroll compliance. This position will assist with business process transformation, establishing and maintaining accounting policies, systems implementation, and strong internal controls. Additionally, this position will assist in establishing, enhancing and monitoring internal controls in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance standards.

We are looking for someone who will liaise with internal customers on business transactions and projects.  The Senior Manager, Accounting will help drive policy development and process improvement, optimizing department processes and building lasting relationships. The successful candidate must be highly analytical, organized, possess a high aptitude for problem-solving, and have excellent written and oral communication skills.  Additionally, the successful candidate will adapt quickly to change and champion the advancement of processes and controls in Hire to Retire, Capitalization of Fixed Assets, including Internally Developed Software, to enhance the accounting and overall finance function. This position reports to the Director, Accounting Operations.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Supervise and train/cross-train the Fixed Asset/Capitalized Software Accounting and Payroll team members.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures that result in productivity and scalability.
  • Timely completion of monthly, quarterly and year-end Financial Closing; assist with documentation requests for completion of quarterly reviews and annual audit. 
  • Maintain accounting policies for Fixed Assets and Internally Developed Software, monitor and ensure timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidance, provide US GAAP interpretation and prepare technical memorandums that document issues in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner.
  • Review and sign-off on account reconciliations, ensuring that account activity and balances are audited for accuracy/reasonableness and reconciled regularly.
  • Review and approve the semi-monthly and monthly domestic and international payrolls.
  • Manage tax compliance for payroll and stock-based compensation, ensuring adherence to all federal, state/provincial, local, and regulatory requirements.
  • Document the current state process for Hire to Retire for the Payroll component and partner with the People Team to identify and implement process enhancements and automation in existing systems while defining requirements for the implementation of a new HRIS.
  • Assist in attaining Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, including maintaining requisite controls and procedures to support financial system and operational processes. Work closely with Internal Audit to develop, establish, remediate and implement additional controls as needed.
  • Help drive improvements to internal processes and work collaboratively with Infrastructure, Engineering and People teams to increase suppliers and employee value creation.
  • Assist with the creation of new policies and procedures as required.
  • Interact with various levels of management on significant matters, often requiring coordination between multiple organizations.
  • Provide positive support and interaction with co-workers, internal customers and business partners.
  • Complete other special analyses and project assignments as directed.
  • Ensure systems are scalable and adequate for the volume and complexity of transactions as well as for analyzing financial data.

What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.  
  • Progressively more responsible experience with a combination of public accounting and private company experience in accounting, auditing and finance, with working knowledge of U.S. GAAP interpretation and financial statement preparation a must.
  • Strong leadership skills and substantial experience managing a team.
  • Strong process improvement execution.  Ability to develop and communicate effective ways to measure improvement.   
  • Ability to manage the day-to-day activities of professional accounting staff and collaborate with peers, other financial management, and external audit personnel.
  • Ability to be exacting, thorough and attentive to detail while still meeting deadlines required.
  • Excellent organizational ability required to handle multiple priorities.
  • Strong desire to learn; self-motivated; takes initiative and can work independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus.
  • Experience and advanced knowledge of various accounting systems such as NetSuite, ADP WFN, and Microsoft Office is required.
