The Foundation is also the sole shareholder in the Mozilla Corporation, the maker of Firefox and other open source tools. Mozilla Corporation functions as a self-sustaining social enterprise – money earned through its products is reinvested into the organization.

Our Finance and Operations Team is seeking a Senior Finance Analyst to join the organization as we implement our strategic plan. Your primary responsibilities include managing the day-to-day financial operations of the Foundation, financial planning including forecasting and reporting, and grants-related financial management. You will work across multiple teams at the Foundation and are expected to play a critical role in maintaining and updating the organization’s strong processes and controls but also be a key partner in financial planning and furthering financial literacy across the organization. The position is available either remotely in the United States and Canada, or office-based in San Francisco and Toronto.

Key Responsibilities:

Day to Day Financial Management

  • Manage outsourced accounting partner relationship which includes providing advice on expense and revenue entries as well as coordinating the alignment of financial information between accounting and reporting software platforms.
  • Review and approve all A/P invoices and internal reimbursement claims - ensure that the claims adhere to policy/proper documentation and provide final check on account coding.
  • Review and approve restricted direct and indirect cost allocations for restricted grants.
  • Review credit card journal entries prior to posting to verify entries and confirm expenses are in accordance with policy.
  • Review monthly financial statements generated by the Foundation’s outsourced accounting team and provide evaluation, insight and analysis to support financial and business decisions.
  • Support the annual audit process in partnership with the outsourced accounting team.
  • Prepare financial information requests and scenario analyses for the Director of Operations and Executive Team.

Grants Related Financial Management

  • Assist Grants Manager in developing/updating grant forecasts and budgets as part of new proposals or budget to actual updates for existing grants.
  • Work with Grants Manager to create templates to track and analyze grant spending adhering to external funder expectations & documentation.
  • Assist in review of grant contracts to ensure funder’s financial requirements are compatible with Foundation’s financial practices and policies.
  • Manage grant-specific audits, evaluations and site visits; respond to auditor’s questions and review draft audit reports and evaluations.

Forecasting and Budgeting

  • Develop and prepare several consolidated forecasts annually utilizing the Foundation’s financial reporting software platform.
  • Support Director of Operations and work directly with budget teams in preparing annual consolidated and team budgets.
  • Prepare periodic projection models & scenarios to assist with management decision making, using analytical experience to provide insight and make recommendations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Operations to ensure all financial policies, procedures and controls are documented and updated.
  • Support Director of Operations and Executive Management in preparation of financial materials for internal and Board of Directors meetings.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 years of finance and accounting experience including at least 5 years of managing finance and accounting functions in the nonprofit sector; CPA and/or Advanced Degree in Finance and/or Accounting is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge in not for profit U.S. GAAP rules and regulations and compliance requirements including restricted and unrestricted grant accounting and direct/indirect expense allocation.
  • Strong experience in financial planning, forecasting and budgeting including demonstrated experience with providing financial analysis and insight to senior management.
  • Highly proficient with developing and working with financial models and forecasting tools.
  • Experienced and highly comfortable with accounting and financial reporting software platforms; Experience with Intacct accounting, Adaptive Insights financial reporting and/or Google Sheets is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; experience with working effectively across a wide range of internal partners.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization skills and ability to multi-task competing tasks.
  • Experience and comfortable with working remotely and across multiple teams and locations.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-growth and entrepreneurial environment.

Salary and Benefits:

The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary that takes into consideration the responsibilities and requirements of the role. The Mozilla Foundation aims to offer at the midpoint of our salary ranges for the purposes of increasing inclusivity and fairness of our offer process and ensuring internal equity. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.

The base salary ranges, along with mid-point, for a Level 15 role in each of the key countries in which we employ staff is listed below. We target the 75th percentile of market pay as a salary band midpoint for all levels, with 10% either side of the midpoint to create a salary range.

  • Canada: $85,386 - $104,373 (mid-point: $94,884)
  • US: $80,293 - $98,136 (mid-point: $89,214)

Depending on the successful candidate’s location, we may also add in a geographic differential to this base salary that accounts for local job market weighting. This differential is applied to the above ranges depending on the successful candidate’s location. Below are some of the common cities in which we hire staff along with representative examples of salary ranges, along with mid-point, with the geographical differential applied:

  • Toronto: $92,131 - $112,618 (mid-point: $102,380)
  • New York: $88,965 - $108,735 (mid-point: $98,849)
