Senior Associate, SALT Income & Franchise
At RSM, state and local tax senior associates work with large and small companies in various industries. They develop strong working relationships with clients built on understanding their businesses and challenges. Senior associates work on multiple team engagements each year, including several pieces of any particular assignment - not just one part. Responsibilities will include:
- Assist an existing team focused on the completion of state tax compliance and consulting projects for various corporations and pass-through entities focused on private equity groups, real estate, consumer/industrial product, technology clients, and other various industries.
- The ideal candidate would also have experience preparing state tax compliance and consulting projects for subchapter C corporation and pass-through clients in the consumer/industrial product, technology space, and other various industries.
- Develop client relationships on various state tax compliance/consulting engagements.
- Developing an understanding of state and local tax statutes, regulations, case law and accounting pronouncements to be able to provide tax consulting advice.
- Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Review and file state tax returns and work papers for corporations, partnerships, and S corporations.
- Prepare refund and controversy claims.
- Consulting with clients, reviewing their tax information, and responding to questions and concerns.
- Prepare, advise and consult with clients on a variety of issues including corporation and pass-through returns with attention to state tax issues such as allocation, apportionment, sourcing, modifications, nexus, unitary filings, exit/gain transactions, flow-through taxation, state composite, and state tax withholding.
- Review information presented on state income tax returns before, during and after preparation.
- Coordinate with RSM federal tax preparation and tax consulting team and with the client.
- Prepare detailed review of estimated payments, withholding and composite tax calculations, as well as owner packages including state K-1s and related filings.
- Research and analyze state tax law, rules, regulations, case law, and legislation and assist with the overall impact on the compliance and reporting and consulting process.
- Prepare tax consulting projects including research and writing projects related to tax planning, gain/loss calculations, liquidity events, restructuring, nexus and sourcing studies, audit defense and controversy, and state tax notices.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills fostering client and team relationships.
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent from an accredited university
- Accounting or Tax major
- Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred
- Meeting education requirements for CPA certification in the state where you are applying for employment
- Working toward the successful completion of the CPA exam - experienced associates have the opportunity to obtain the audit hours required for full certification
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Tax preparation skills
- ProFx and One Source experience a plus
- Ability to work effectively on a team
- Ability to work and multitask in a fast-paced environment
