The Opportunity

This is a critical role within the Risk Finance department and supports activities related to Ally's largest estimate on the balance sheet - the allowance for loan losses. The Senior Accountant is an important position on the team, with responsibility over the preparation of monthly accounting responsibilities, including the preparation of journal entries and components of Ally's financial statements. The Senior Accountant will also supporting the forecasting process for the allowance and provision, preparing materials and presenting to senior management and the Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) Committee, and partnering with Finance and Risk business partners to understand changes in the allowance and provision expense that could have upstream and downstream impacts. This role provides broad exposure to various finance and risk roles company-wide.

The Work Itself

  • Assist in the preparation of the quarterly and year-end financial statements (10-Q/10-K).
  • Execution of certain monthly accounting close processes.
  • Support Ally's forecasting process by working with Finance and Risk business partners to aggregate information and communicate expectations for the allowance and provision expense by portfolio over the forecasted period.
  • Lead the preparation process leading up to the quarterly ACL Committee meetings which includes working with risk business partners to obtain data and prepare materials.
  • Maintain robust documentation which underlines the ACL Committee governance process that is audible and supportable and ensure SOX controls are strictly adhered to.
  • Support Risk Finance's accounting process including month end close (as necessary) and the identification and impairment calculation for retail auto loans that are determined to be troubled debt restructurings.
  • Evaluate and communicate expected impacts to the allowance associated with new products and acquisitions.
  • Utilize SAP and OneStream to support internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Support qualitative improvements in control operations to reduce / eliminate control deficiencies.
  • Assists in the resolution of accounting problems thru the appropriate channels leaders, to aid in the understanding of accounting activities.
  • Drive audit compliance within the areas for which you are responsible.


The Skills You Bring

  • 3+ years previous work experience in Accounting or related field preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred (Accounting major preferred) CPA (or equivalent) and /or MBA preferred.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • General technical accounting and/or functional skills for area of expertise.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and high degree of self-motivation.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize data, perform independent analysis, and provide explanations/conclusions to management.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision while applying previous experience to execute all but the most complex tasks.
  • Ability to lead small projects or contribute meaningfully to larger projects.
  • Comfortable interacting with other personnel in group or support staff from other departments; may interact with other internal and external personnel (i.e., external auditors, regulators) on specific projects or more complex tasks, usually under supervision.
  • SAP and OneStream experience preferred.
  • Advanced MS Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups, etc.) preferred.
