Primary responsibilities of a Manager on the Reconciliation team within Accounting & Finance Solutions (AFS) include:

  • Lead a team of skilled reconcilers who perform balance sheet reconciliations for all business units within Nationwide
  • Review reconciliations prepared by direct reports, with a focus on policy compliance and quality
  • Partner with other leaders and contacts throughout the business to drive resolution of aged items and other issues, leveraging technology and process changes to drive solutions that continuously improve end-to-end operational processes
  • Perform resource management and team planning tasks such as workload management and integration of new work
  • Foster relationships with each of the team members' business partners and manage interactions with them to provide the best possible customer experience
  • Provide subject matter expertise and support for the team and others where applicable
  • Foster an engaging environment by creating an inclusive atmosphere and encouraging the development of direct reports
  • Assist in process optimization projects to enhance controls and enable more efficient operations

As a Manager, you'll lead and coordinate the accumulating, recording, preparation and reporting of financial data required for regulatory and management purposes. We'll count on you to provide analysis and interpretation of accounting records and financial documents. In addition, you'll develop and propose change in accounting policy, procedures and systems support, and determine accounting practices for a product/functional area of responsibility.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads the accurate accumulation, preparation and maintenance of financial accounting records for both internal and external reporting.
  • Leads the development of financial statements according to prescribed schedules.
  • Prepares, reviews and recommends improvements in accounting, and financial reporting systems.
  • Runs and/or participates in special projects/assignments as advised by senior management.
  • Reviews and analyzes statements and supplemental data for external and management reporting purposes.
  • Works closely with internal auditors, public accountants, federal tax examiners and others in performing assigned accounting functions.
  • Leads the preparation of special reports, analyses and financials as requested by management.
  • Represents the department director, as assigned, for both development and workflow assistance.
  • Manages associates, including performance, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Accounting Director/Officer; Manages a team of 4 or more accounting professionals.

Typical Skills and Experience:

Education: Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress towards CPA preferred.

Experience: At least six years related accounting experience; insurance experience preferred. People management experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: GAAP and/or STAT accounting principles, practices and procedures, and insurance/financial products regulatory requirements. Product specific knowledge also required, such as investments, tax, property/casualty, life and/or subsidiary accounting and financial analysis. Verbal and written communication skills for contact with all levels of associates including business unit leadership, external parties such as public accountants, state examiners, industry professionals, and other clients. Ability to analyze and solve accounting problems, interpret financial documents and data, analyze legal requirements, examine and monitor accounting cycles and flows, and review general ledger entries and audit work papers and schedules. Ability to lead and train associates in all aspects of assigned accounting record maintenance, and financial statement preparation. Working Conditions: Normal office environment. May require extended hours in periods of high volume. Must be able to handle a variety of work within strict deadlines and the related stress.
