Head of Finance - Remote (USA)
The Role
This position is all about building a strong finance capability that enhances our ability to scale the business. As the Head of Finance, you’ll be the finance and accounting leader at Ionic, helping drive critical decision-making through high-quality financial reporting and forecasting. You’ll have to move with ease between operating at a strategic planning level and diving into the smallest details of accounting. The Head of Finance will own the monthly financial accounting and reporting process, including monitoring general accounting practices, developing internal accounting controls, and leading various strategic projects. This role will report directly to the President & COO, will work daily with the senior management team, and will have exposure to and support from our venture capital investors. The right candidate will enjoy the opportunity to learn fast and take on additional responsibility.
Outcomes
What does success look like in this role? In this role you will be measured on your ability to:
• Quickly take over our financial planning and forecasting process
• Provide the COO and management team with with regular (semi-monthly), clear and accurate forecast updates
• Assist the management team in decision-making based on current business trends and your forecasting output
• Ensure that our (already established) accounting process and mechanisms runs smoothly (fast, efficient monthly close and clean books)
• Ensure that our financial/accounting records and forecasts are “exit-ready,” i.e. appropriate for and conducive to an eventual exit / due diligence process
•Successfully complete our first audit (likely late 2022)
Responsibilities
Your areas of responsibility will include:
Finance:
• Orchestrate a semi-annual budget process that will become the foundation for a rolling forecast and provide the President and management team with regular visibility into business performance and an input into ongoing planning
• Compare actual performance with plan and rolling forecast in order to help the management team understand why any deviations may have occurred
• Build cross-functional relationships with and help drive alignment across the management team on resource and investment allocation with clear plans to achieve revenue and profitability goals.
• Prepare and improve monthly KPIs and financial reporting packages, board presentations, and external reporting packages for investors.
• Analyze revenues and expenses monthly and perform variance analysis to ensure they are recorded accurately monthly and identify any unusual monthly trends.
• Ensure that our current and future “finance technology stack” are appropriate for the business
Accounting:
• Manage day-to-day accounting operations and month-end close process to ensure accurate and timely close of US GAAP financial statements.
• Responsible for oversight of general accounting activities including revenue recognition, accounts receivable & payable, general ledger and other activities.
• Analyze, recommend, and implement new systems and processes to improve the efficiency, visibility and quality of accounting and ultimately financial reporting.
• Work collaboratively with external auditors to successfully complete Ionic’s its first annual financial statement audit in 2022
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
• 7+ years of relevant experience, preferably a mix of startups, FP&A, and/or accounting
• Solid understanding of US GAAP and its application to private companies, especially subscription/SaaS businesses
• Experience in a private equity or venture capital backed company
• Strong financial modeling experience building up a detailed, bottom-up views of a business. Ability to balance that with top-down perspective and sanity checking.
• Experience structuring (or running) a FinOps technology stack
• An energetic & entrepreneurial team player
• A strong and proactive communicator
• Self-starter who operates independently while being collaborative with the broader team
• Strong work ethic - someone who does whatever it takes to get the job done right

Location
Fully remote, Ionic is currently a 100% remote workforce and was largely distributed prior to the pandemic (more than half the team did not work from the office). Our headquarters is located in Madison, WI.
