Director, Community Finance
External Affairs works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create a world of greater socioeconomic opportunity through advocating for an inclusive society, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich lives. Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment, Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement. Through our teams, we have unparalleled access to a diverse group of motivated changemakers similarly focused on the ingredients for a more perfect future.
We focus on innovation and opportunity -- on long term well being for our associates, customers, and communities. We dream in disruption -- at scale -- especially for those who have been underserved. This is the language of changing things for the better, of the future, and...of Capital One.
Capital One's commitment to impact in this space is clear. In 2021, the company provided more than $9.3 billion in community development loans -- the largest amount in our history -- on the heels of originating more CD loans than any other bank for the last five years for which peer data is available (2016-20). The vast majority of that lending supported affordable housing for low- to moderate-income households.
Our Community Finance team is one of the top providers of affordable housing opportunities in banking. Since its inception, Capital One has invested almost $17 billion in affordable housing and provided financing for more than 160,000 affordable housing units -- more than 11,000 in this past year alone.
As we continue to build our commitment to our customers and communities, we'd like for you to consider being part of this very special team. Applying to this post will put you on the radar for opportunities across multiple teams.
Community Finance Team
Capital One's Community Finance team originates debt and equity to support affordable housing development. Community Finance provides debt financing and invests in low-income housing credits through proprietary and multi-fund equity fund structures.
The team is organized into four functional areas:
- Our Originations group builds relationships with stakeholders, including developers, syndicators, government agencies and other community stakeholders to understand community needs and to deliver capital to finance affordable housing
- Our Underwriting & Portfolio Management group assesses risk through analysis of due diligence and market conditions to structure new originations and to monitor the existing debt and equity portfolio
- Our Loan & Equity Administration group manages daily operations of debt and equity activities, including closing, booking, funding, servicing, payoff and dispositions
- Our Innovation & Analytics group drives innovation, reporting, analytics, and process improvements and will shape the upfront, strategic direction of new initiatives
While individual roles may differ, general responsibilities at this level will likely include:
- Lead across the organization, External Affairs, and the Enterprise to deepen community impact, including through new business initiatives, change management, and continuous well managed processes and controls
- Support development & execution of strategic plan & vision, oversee the identification and execution of critical process improvements
- Foster an environment that provides a balance between operational excellence with the need for impact, innovation, growth, customer retention and sustainability
- Collaborate with business and other risk management teams to facilitate open dialogue around risk and continuous control environment enhancements in support of periodic assessments, business reviews and internal/external audits
- Establish, promote and maintain appropriate application of all bank and line of business policies and procedures and support and drive adherence to regulatory compliance requirements
- Encourage an atmosphere of urgency toward meeting customer's needs and providing excellent customer service.
- Cultivate a positive and inclusive work environment by ensuring all team members are properly challenged and motivated, inspired and play an integral role in the team's productivity through an effective and equitable allocation of assignments
- Support associate development through activities including but not limited to ongoing mentoring, coaching; identification and delivery of cross-functional training opportunities; and career development planning
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the bank, its customers, portfolio exposure, competitive environment, economic trends and policies; may include attending and participating in industry events, workshop, and conferences as appropriate
In these roles, associates should be: a genuine teammate -- exemplifying a "we" orientation and a commitment to "connect the dots" broadly, including outside your own team; a risk manager -- adapting to new information, changing environments, and using analytical and critical thinking for the tough calls; a communicator and influencer -- elevating and demonstrating open, clear, and concise communication for for the audience and purpose; a learner -- curious and willing to learn new things; a change agent -- using candor and optimism to experiment, lean into, and lead in new and unfamiliar spaces; and a beacon of inclusive leadership, including a commitment to leading and supporting the development of diverse teams.
You should ask why, explore, and be ready to come to the table with a totally new idea. You're motivated by solving complex problems and you like taking on new ones. You should enjoy rigorous analysis -- diving into the data, testing assumptions, and working to unearth root causes. And you should also lead with the customer in mind, with human-centered design and end-user perspective as the basis for decision-making.
