Shelf Engine is searching for a talented Controller to join our growing team. In this role, you will work with multiple teams across functions to scale our Accounting team as we continue to grow. You’ll accomplish this by being a self-starter, motivated to find optimal ways of doing things and establishing new processes that scale. You will be responsible for managing and performing the day-to-day accounting operations including AR/AP, General Ledger, Treasury, Payroll, Tax, and Consolidation, as well as managing financial audits and special projects. 

This position is based in Seattle, WA. 

As a Controller at Shelf Engine, you will: 

  • Manage all accounting processes for the Company
  • Lead a team of professional accountants, including managing deliverables, mentoring, and coaching in a productive, team-focused environment
  • Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements 
  • Implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective processes to improve the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and GAAP accounting policies and procedures
  • Assist the Head of Finance with financial reporting to external investors and stakeholders, as well as with various ad-hoc financial projects and requests
  • Act as the primary liaison with our external auditors and manage that relationship to maintain compliance and ensure due diligence readiness
  • Implement, document and maintain adequate and effective internal controls
  • Maintain relationships with bankers, attorneys, insurance providers, and service providers and manage the contracts and related instruments (financing, asset management, capital, and stock options) for compliance and notification.
  • Own the tax function, assisting in the preparation of quarterly tax returns, annual audits, and annual tax return preparations
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants, optimize working capital, and prepare cash flow forecasts
  • Ensure compliance with all other applicable laws, rules, and regulations

What we are looking for in a candidate: 

  • You embrace our company principles: make the first move, make better decisions, be furiously curious, commit and deliver, have empathy, invent solutions, be authentic
  • You have 8-10 years of experience in private and public companies, including 2+ years managing a team
  • Public accounting firm experience with a Big 4 accounting firm working with a mix of private and public company clients is strongly preferred
  • Experience in the technology sector preferred, but not required
  • Professional certification required (CPA or CMA)
  • Strong knowledge of technical GAAP requirements
  • A solid understanding of internal control design and operational efficiency
  • Strong organizational, process management, and communication skills and high attention to detail
  • Advanced time-management skills to handle multiple deliverables simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-growth, and rapidly changing environment
  • Experience managing a cap table preferred, but not required
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting or equivalent professional experience
  • You are authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer
