Southern Company Services (SCS) currently has a position available in our accounting department located at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. This position is an integral part of a team that performs traditional accounting, billing, and financial & regulatory reporting. Read on to learn more about this exciting opportunity!
Position Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field of study.
- CPA or CPA candidate highly preferred. An advanced degree is desired.
- Minimum of 2 years of recent general accounting experience (public accounting experience preferred); including experience in financial reporting and financial statement preparation.
- Knowledge of the following:
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Securities and Exchange Commission rules and regulations
- Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance requirements
- Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accounting rules and regulations.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including working with people at all levels, and across multiple functions and multiple company locations.
Job Responsibilities
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of journals with appropriate support in order to ensure timely month-end closing and integrity of financials.
- Complete account reconciliations by scheduled due date and ensure adequate supporting documentation is included with the reconciliation.
- Prepare management analysis report of accruals, deferred debits/credits, balance sheet and cash flow analysis, etc.
- Prepare annual and quarterly external audit requests, as needed, ensuring timely response and maintenance of a good working relationship with auditors.
- Promote innovation, improve repetitive processes, and create efficiencies in a dynamic workflow environment.

- Strong project management skills, including prioritizing tasks, building effective working relationships, balancing workload demands, anticipating next steps, and adapting quickly to changing needs.
