As an HMI (Human Machine Interface) Programmer and Requirements Engineering in the Large Electric Power Systems Controls team, you will work closely with the Software Engineering Manager and other development partners to develop the requirements and the programming for our generator and solutions controls. You will work with other team members to develop and execute complex controls to help take Caterpillar on the journey to be a leader in paralleling systems while working with a global engineering team. You will be a part of our global team and help to deliver on NPI program deliverables, continually learning and staying abreast of innovative technology, mentoring and coaching team members to deepen your professional network. The key role of this position is that of a subject matter expert for HMI programming and controls. You will work with other programmers to help develop executable programs.
This position will work in a technical role responsible for design and function of UI for the complex electric control systems including generator controls and HMI development. The incumbent will provide engineering leadership with junior team members and other engineering teams through leading key initiatives, documenting requirements, supporting NPI development, testing, validation, and resolution of product problems.
Job Duties / responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance including interpreting market requirements and support of developing requirements
  • Lead projects with technical expertise to release new products, features, components, and systems
  • Complete projects on time and on budget
  • Refine and improve designs by conducting investigations and developing solutions
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to define and meet product requirements
  • Develop, validate, maintain, and support component and systems through internal lab and field sites.
  • Provide guidance and support product regulatory compliance and certification if necessary
  • Up to 10% Travel


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Technology, or Computer Science curriculum plus >6 years engineering or product development experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, >10 years of progressive and relevant engineering experience (including product application, testing, and process design experience in electric power generation, electrical & electronic control systems, or User Interface systems)
  • Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and have an extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications.
  • Basic knowledge of AC and DC Electrical systems
  • HMI programming (platform independent)
  • Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.


Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science
  • Experience with Technical writing (product manuals)
  • Computer networking and communications practices (C, C++, Java, VHDL, C#,MATLAB, Arduino, Assembly, Javascript, and Python)
  • Any Graphics Packages is a plus: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Corel Draw, Visual Basics, etc.
  • Experience with product safety, conformance, and certification (ex. UL, ISO, NEC)
  • Strong computer skills
  • Familiarity with different controls competitors
  • Cat Engineering Standards
  • Ability to understand system design
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Good understanding of paralleling AC Power System applications
