About the Role:

Cruise Privacy Engineering’s mission is to make Cruise the model for AV consumer privacy. We do so through privacy preserving products and services built on top of robust privacy enhancing infrastructure, policy, and clear communications. The team implements novel solutions to protect consumer privacy ranging from blurring imagery to end to end telemetry and alerting; builds and deploys tooling to identify and label sensitive datasets; and reviews consumer features and enterprise data collection and use to protect consumer and employee privacy.

In this role you will both lead this small team as their manager as well as take an active role in assessing privacy threats to Cruise and its customers and architecting solutions. Applicants should have strong privacy engineering skills as well as either some experience as a manger or a record of technical leadership that is looking to expand into a limited managerial role. Applicants should feel comfortable contributing to both roles as well as frequently switching between them.

You should be comfortable in uncharted territory as we build unique privacy technologies and grow user trust. We need your skills and passion to make it happen. The role can be remote for the right candidate.

What you"ll be doing:

  • Leading the technical implementation strategy of how to protect the privacy of Cruise users and Cruise employees.
  • Be responsible for prioritizing privacy efforts and help other teams’ prioritize their privacy requirements and fixes.
  • Working with teams across Cruise to ensure that we are aligned with privacy laws and regulations from a technical perspective.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest architectural advancements, understanding how architecture impacts privacy and security.
  • Collaborating within and outside the security organization to achieve privacy. 

What you must have

  • Excited about privacy and to be on the cutting edge of privacy problems
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a similar technical field or equivalent practical experience
  • Proven track record in a related role and experience with concepts and practices such as: identifying privacy risks in products and developing robust mitigations; data governance; and creating novel solutions to regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of technical privacy issues (e.g., cookie management, encryption, geolocation, machine learning, IoT privacy and security challenges), and experience with the software development lifecycle
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate across subject areas (e.g. engineering, legal, policy)
  • Familiarity with privacy laws, regulations, standards, and best practices such as CCPA, GDPR, and ISO 27701.
  • An interest in building creative solutions to challenging privacy problems with a focus on mentorship and scaling the team’s impact.
