TuSimple Company Overview

Come join a higher calling and find a deeper purpose!

TuSimple is a fully commercialized autonomous trucking company.   As a multi-national Artificial Intelligence Technology Company, we are at the epicenter of the Autonomous Vehicle Universe. Our breakthroughs are leading the industry in autonomous trucking.

While inventing the framework of Autonomous Driving, our live fleet of autonomous Trucks have fully evolved land freight.    TuSimple is leading the way by hiring the most talented researchers, engineers, and scientists.

TuSimple was founded half a decade ago with the goal of bringing the top minds in the world together to achieve the dream of a driverless truck solution. With a foundation in computer vision, algorithms, mapping, and Artificial Intelligence, TuSimple has created the first commercially viable Autonomous Freight Network.

Opportunity Overview

TuSimple is currently seeking an experienced Staff Systems Engineer - Systems Modeling & Analysis (SM&A) to help expand our system-level modeling capabilities for quantitative requirements evaluation. This Staff Systems Engineer  will be a top-level subject matter expert in developing static, dynamic and discrete event models at the system level, which will help accelerate autonomous truck requirements analysis, refinement and verification. The models developed will ultimately integrate to provide a high-level digital twin of each of TuSimple’s autonomous truck designs, thereby also supporting early stage architectural trade studies and V&V activities. When combined with our rapidly growing MBSE capability, SM&A will facilitate tighter integration of model-based design into our end-to-end engineering processes. This is a highly visible role, with strong cross-functional collaboration across Product, Systems, Test and other Engineering functions.

This Staff Systems Engineer - SM&A will also support Systems Engineering & Test leadership in building world-class system-level modeling and analysis competencies in safety-critical Model-Based Design (MBD). Given the extreme safety-criticality of autonomous freight applications, our SM&A experts act as the first line of defense in quantitatively ensuring safety in all our designs and support efficient requirements refinement via agile methodologies.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver the full range of system-level modeling, simulation & analyses artifacts needed to support development of autonomous trucks, including models for vehicle dynamics, control & diagnostics, communications and pre-implementation fault injection analyses
  • Act as a deep subject matter expert (SME) on all aspects of system-level modeling, including developing variable-fidelity simulation & analysis methods to thoroughly stress test requirements for defensive driving and other complex autonomy behaviors
  • Responsible for system-level model fidelity, calibration, and reusability across the design chain
  • Support quantitative analysis of alternatives (AoA) and architectural design trade studies as commissioned by Systems Architectects
  • Implement, configure and customize SM&A tools & processes necessary to efficiently model system-level behaviors and prototype systems verification & validation concepts
  • Work closely with Systems, Algorithms,, Software and Hardware engineering SMEs to ensure tight connectivity and alignment with the overall MBSE and MBD process
  • Mentor other engineers in use of state-of-the-art MBD tools and methodologies to accelerate development by maximizing design reuse and reducing refactoring across applications
  • Identify broader SM&A needs and evangelize increased use of model-based design and verification methods to ensure TuSimple accomplishes its key business objectives

Experience & Skills Required

  • 10 years of experience in MBD, including experience using system-level models in highly-regulated safety-critical industries like Automotive, Aerospace & Defense, Energy or Chemical Processing
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Control, Mechanical, Electrical or a related Engineering field
  • 6 years of hands-on experience as a Senior Systems Engineer implementing complex (sub)system designs and validations
  • Deep competence in at least one core robotics and autonomy discipline, especially systems control
  • Experience developing and customizing  models to answer pressing system-level design questions at different levels of fidelity
  • Experience with modeling of software, robotic or similarly complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Proven ability to develop model libraries for standalone, integrated or optimization use cases
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, document & institutionalize new engineering tools & processes
  • Strong team-building skills to support the rapid growth of the SM&A function
  • Experience developing models that enable verification and validation of system designs  based on requirements
  • Experience developing system-level models to support Hazard & Risk Analysis, fault trees, Failure Mode & Effect Analysis (FMEA), and other Safety-centric analysis methodologies

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Controls, Robotics, Mechatronics or other modeling-centric field, including  Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Physics
  • Master’s  in Systems Engineering  or Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) qualification
  • Hands-on first-principles and physics-based modeling experience in an Automotive, Aerospace & Defense or other safety-critical industry
  • Strong communication & change management skills to promote MBD adoption across TuSimple
  • Systems modeling experience at the Staff Engineer level or above
  • Experience integrating optimization-based methodologies into architecture design and analysis
  • Quantitative modeling experience, including using Matlab-Simulink, Dymola/Modelica or similar code generation tools to accelerate coding
  • Working knowledge of the sequential “-in-the-Loop” approach to continuous systems verification  (e.g. Model-in-the-Loop, Processor-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop)

Bonus Points (optional section)

  • Automotive industry engineering experience, with a Level 2+ autonomous vehicle developer
  • Understanding of ISO 21448, ISO26262, DO-178B/C, or ARP4761 safety-critical system standards
  • Experience with fault trees, FMEA, and other Safety-centric methodologies
  • Ability to write, review or functionally understand implemented C++ and/or Python code
  • Familiarity with an MBSE toolchain including UML/SysML modeling tools like Cameo, MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, Rhapsody or equivalent offerings
  • Experience working  with requirements management tools like  DOORS, Jama or equivalent
  • Embedded software development experience in an MBSE-centric framework, including use of autocode tools like Matlab-Simulink, Rhapsody in C, or similar code generators to accelerate coding
