Job Description

The position of Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, deployment, configuration and maintenance of the Luth Research IT Infrastructure for all of Luth Research’s products and services in order to solve technical issues, create solutions for technical needs, maintain safe and secure working order for all staff technical and equipment requirements to ensure the highest level of internal and external customer service with minimum disruption and time resulting in growth and profitability for the organization.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, implement and maintain Luth Research Information Systems, including servers, storage, and networking, to ensure availability, solutions and scalability of products and services to support company goals of growth and profitability.
  • Manage, direct and train Help Desk processes, procedures, and personnel to provide the highest level of customer service and problem resolution ensuring the availability of Luth Information Systems and Resources.
  • Develop, design, implement and maintain processes and applications to ensure all Luth Research data is managed securely and backed up according to policy to mitigate risk of data loss.
  • Provide professional, high-quality communication and timely problem resolution to internal and external customers to ensure the best possible service experience to foster teamwork and professionalism to the IT Department and all other Departments to reach company goals of growth and profitability.
  • Maintain appropriate and thorough documentation of Luth Research Information Systems to ensure all systems can be properly maintained, upgraded and modified for all operations to operate timely at peak performance to reach company goals of growth, profitability and quality.
  • Ensure the security of Luth Research Information Systems, including but not limited to access controls, log monitoring, IDS, physical security, and other controls to ensure all systems and processes meet industry standards at the highest level in the marketplace.
  • Evaluate, establish, and maintain vendor relations to negotiate the best solutions and products at competitive prices to support company goals.
  • Respond to tickets escalated by help desk staff, alerts raised by monitoring systems.
  • Review output of monitoring systems for: Anomaly detection capacity planning, and service delivery goals.
  • Provision and deprovision severs and networking equipment, install and configure server software, and ensure functioning of archive and backup processes.
  • Maintain operational documentation, inventory management, scheduled maintenance, and special projects as delegated by Service Manager.
  • Any other tasks as directed by the President, Director of IT, or Executive Management.

Accessibility: Must be able to access and function within areas key to productivity. Adequate manual dexterity to operate assigned and shared office equipment. Ability to travel on periodic overnight and extended stays and work extended hours when necessary.

Communications: Must speak clearly and fluently to communicate on a wide range of topics. Above average reading comprehension, and grammatically correct written communication skills. Must have the ability to understand and respond intelligently to business correspondence. Interpersonal skills as needed to persuade, manage conflict, debate and negotiate. Response to pressure should be calm and reasonable.

Judgment: Comprehension of job requirements and procedures. Can initiate and perform work assignments under minimal supervision that may be broad, varied, and complex in nature. Employee must have the ability to use educated and intuitive judgment to make decisions.

Flexibility: Must be able to work in a shifting environment with ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.

Analysis: Mathematical aptitude; use of numeric calculations for accuracy of reports and tasks. 

Organization: Organizational and time management skills sufficient to plan and accomplish assigned goals to complete projects timely and fully.

Logic: Deductive reasoning ability to enable the appropriate application of general concepts to specific situations. Able to translate theory into business practices. Employee must apply experience, skills and information to identify problems and plan strategic resolutions.

Qualifications

Education, Experience & Skills:

  • AS in MIS/CS or 7 years related technical discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Strong management and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced experience with Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems.
  • Strong networking knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong Scripting skills – any language
  • Strong VMware vSphere or Cloud Director
  • Knowledge of AWS Admin and Postgres Admin
  • Experience of any of the following is a plus: Nagios (or other monitoring system), ticketing systems, server hardware, Puppet, Hadoop, and Squid.
  • Strong team player, is quality conscious, has solid analytical, written and verbal communication skills, and is highly self-motivated.
