Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #1 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News 2022-23). Position Description:
This opportunity will provide tool development, modeling, and systems engineering support to the MSFC Technical Management Branch (EV71) supporting the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) project.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will implement Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches through the use of various modeling and database tools in order to support the development of key systems engineering products such as a concept of operations, requirements, specifications, functional analysis and decomposition products, and models, as well as support program/project milestones and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. The successful candidate will work with various customers/partners from inception to deployment in order to ensure stakeholder needs are satisfied.
The system engineering support that the candidate will provide and perform includes:
- Develop systems engineering tools and models to support the development of systems engineering products, data, interfaces, requirements, and their interconnections.
- Implement Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) best practices, approaches, and techniques using tools such as MagicDraw, Cameo, Cradle, and/or DOORS NextGeneration (DNG).
- Document functions, perform functional decompositions, and define functional requirements as well as perform traces between them to explain their interconnections.
- Develop and maintain full export capability of the models into traditional digital formats like MS Office and PDF media.
- Manage MAV team access to the models using Teamwork Cloud.
- Provide technical integration with other engineering disciplines.
- Support element and/or subsystem design trades and analysis.
- Communicate issues, best practices, lessons-learned and other technical positions related to tool development and deployment as well as recommendations to support MBSE approaches and implementation.
- Identify, describe, and communicate potential risks related to the products, processes and interactions in the systems engineering processes and work with the MAV Risk Manager to document them in the NASA Risk Management System.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Degree in Systems, Aerospace, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 0-5 total years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration.
The candidate is required to have:
- Experience using tools such as MagicDraw, DOORS NextGeneration (DNG), Cradle, and/or to support development of systems engineering products.
- Experience developing systems engineering products using MBSE tools and approaches.
- Experience modeling vehicle or spacecraft systems using tools such as MagicDraw.
- Familiarity with systems engineering practices.
- Experience working with various engineering groups to complete a project or engineering task and facilitate/execute program plans and resolve systems integration issues.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook).
Personnel are expected to be self-directed, effective team players who are familiar with working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
Desired qualifications and experience (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as a selection factor):
- Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) project.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (0 to 20%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues. Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks. Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities.
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday 7:30 - 4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
