Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). Position Description:

  • This position will provide technical leadership and systems engineering and integration support to the Technical Management Branch/(EV71) in support of the SLS Systems Engineering and Integration Office (SEIO) as well as the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) LSE Team.


Specific support to be provided includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard system engineering (SE) techniques, procedures, and criteria to this effort.
  • Coordinate and interface with EV, SLS Elements, Task Teams, SLS project teams and personnel, the SLS Prime Contractors, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, TIMs, technical performance meetings, teleconferences, working groups, and trade studies.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and support to aid in the development of systems and operational engineering activities and products to support SLS design, development, test, and flight readiness efforts.
  • Serve as the EUS Technical Management Sub-lead, assisting the EUS LSE and LSE Alternate with the integration of efforts across the EUS LSE team.
  • Identify, plan, participate, and lead, as appropriate, milestone reviews, checkpoints, and TIMs as directed by Systems Engineering and Integration Office (SEIO) LSE/Alternates or the EUS LSE/Alternate. Develop review plans and provide support for setup, training, administration, tracking of review item discrepancies (RIDs), RID burn down analysis, reporting, and facilitating completion of milestone reviews.
  • Provide leadership for and/or support for the development of key systems engineering products for Program/Project/Elements, in support of program/project milestones and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured.
  • Develop, prepare, and deliver technical programmatic briefings, as requested.
  • Support the coordination, development, integration, and reporting of Technical Performance Metrics.
  • Serve as the book manager and/or change package engineer for SLS Program documentation such as the Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP), SLS Program Agreement Document (PAD), the SLS Reference Configuration Document, and the SLS Vehicle Condition Imagery Reference Document.
  • Manage Level 2 risks, which includes working with the team to identify, write, track, and maintain risks in the NASA risk management tool.
  • Lead and facilitate of complex tasks and trade studies, as well as independent management of subtasks with minimum government oversight.
  • Support or lead, as needed, integrated vehicle design and analyses including vehicle requirements analysis, modeling and simulation, technical implementation, and verification methods.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

A degree in aerospace, mechanical, systems or a related engineering field or discipline is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 5 years of experience, or a master's with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

The candidate is required to have:

  • Familiarity with the systems engineering life cycle end-to-end development ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration, requirement verification, and flight readiness that ultimately lead to flight hardware certification.
  • Familiarity with the development and documentation of requirements, processes, and/or procedures associated with aerospace flight and ground hardware design, development, production, test, verification, evaluation, integration, and/or operations.
  • Familiarity with project lifecycle reviews.
  • Experience integrating disciplines for design, analyses, and operation of space vehicles.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & Outlook) are required.
  • Excellent written and oral technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering project briefings.
  • Experience negotiating and collaborating to resolve complex technical problems and breaking down complex problems or issues into manageable pieces.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and effective team players with customer relation skills, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment who are willing to assume a Systems Integration role in this effort.


Desired qualifications and experience (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as a selection factor):

  • Familiarity with vehicle integration for human rated space launch vehicles or similar vehicles.
  • Experience with Risk Management processes. Familiarity with NASA Continuous Risk Management processes is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the NASA Space Launch System, its Elements, Interfaces, and Mission Configurations.
  • Hardware knowledge related to the EUS or another cryogenic upper stage.
  • Experience in project planning and management as well as leading and facilitating studies of complex aerospace problems involving evaluation of technical, cost, and schedule issues with associated risk is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to technical management.
  • Familiarity with Space Shuttle vehicle or other similar space vehicles and programs is highly desired.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (< 10%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (40%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (60%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities.

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30 - 4:30, Monday thru Friday. Shift work is required during 24 hour operations. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. Flexible scheduling.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
