Northwestern Mutual is seeking a highly organized and strategically focused Principal Systems Engineer to join our Solutions Engineering organization. The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for defining the long-term technology strategy and roadmap for the Digital Workplace organization, leading the efforts to implement innovative solutions focused on improving and reimagining customer experience, and defining standard methodologies for engineering and architecture across the DW organization. This role requires a high degree of experience and technical expertise across multiple areas including networking, desktop and server engineering, virtualization automation, AWS and Azure cloud platforms, system monitoring technologies like Systrack and Aternity. An ideal candidate must also possess the ability to communicate effectively to audiences at all levels up to and including executive leadership.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Cumulative of prior level plus following:

  • Set standards and engineering best practices for an engineering domain.
  • Set technical roadmap and technical vision for a broad set of technology subject areas.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers.
  • Remain hands on to be an effective technical leader.
  • Cultivate network and talent pipeline by attending and presenting at meetups, conferences, and tech events.
  • Develop strategies, write proposals and pitch them across the enterprise for new architectures, systems and approaches.
  • Apply industry leading and ground-breaking standard methodologies in order to analyze and develop software solutions.
  • Design, organize, and implement high impact solutions across the organization.
  • Lead and drive architecture for key engineering initiatives using proven design and architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrate a history of consistently delivering successful solutions across multiple dimensions, including performance, scalability, robustness and maintainability.
  • See and present "the big picture" and offer solutions to make it better.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers, along with assigning and suggest stretch assignments.
  • Thrive in ambiguous situations.
  • Successfully communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and all levels of detail.
  • Provide practical direction to teams in the face of complex problems involving multiple partners.
  • Influence teams, technology or business leaders on impactful issues and decisions.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 9-14 years professional experience


May include:

  • 9 years of professional IT experience.
  • 9 years of domain specific experience for role.
  • 6 years experience with infrastructure automation, modern development and scripting languages
  • 6 years experience outside primary domain with concepts such as basic network troubleshooting (connectivity, DNS).
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills within area of expertise, and in adjacent domains.
  • Knowledgeable practitioner with CICD concepts, and tools, branching strategies and using knowledge to assist in delivering an infrastructure as a product.
  • Solid understanding of traditional or cloud computing technologies including Networking, Compute, Storage, Development, Data, Operations, or Security.
  • History delivering and support highly available architectures.
  • 6 years experience in one of the following (AWS, Kubernetes, Linux, Windows) administration and configuration.
  • Experience with multiple delivery methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall.
