Meet the team:

The Autonomy Systems & Safety team at Argo AI is responsible for developing requirements, analyses, V&V plans for multiple autonomy functions. This role is in the sub-team System & Safety Integration, which is responsible for addressing the most unusual or cross-functional of those functions: ex. Mapping or Minimal Risk Maneuvers. To do so, we are self-learners who dive into multiple areas, we use that self-acquired knowledge to align across stakeholders, we make proposals on design decisions, we analyze what can go wrong and do everything to fix it before it happens. We need to come up with creative solutions to address all the problems that can arise, ex., from relying on a map and making sure they don’t happen in practice. We develop functions of which the borders are unclear and we make them clear to drive the organization towards the launch of our product. We also work until the highest abstraction levels of our vehicle by, ex., defining the precise domain of operations of our product for our launch and the intermediate domains to get there.

What you’ll do: 

• Analyze the impact of maps on the safety of our system.
• Based on those analyses, derive requirements that make sure our AV is safe no matter what.
• Work together with software and V&V teams to make sure those mitigation mechanisms are realistic.
• Dive into our existing map creation methods and interact with relevant stakeholders to improve those.
• Dig into all the possible ways our AV uses the map from perception, trajectory generation to prediction.
• Become an expert in robotics and autonomous systems, ex. Localization, Perception, Prediction, Motion Planning, and Motion Control systems.
• Be ready to scale up all the above to a product that we plan to release in multiple US and EU cities.

What you'll need to succeed:

• Degree in Systems Engineering, Data Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science or a related field
• Ability and will to solve engineering decisions via a data-based approach rather than indefinite whiteboard analysis
• Strong ‘figure-it-out’ mentality when given complex and ambiguous tasks, requiring decisive & pragmatic engineering. You want to have an impact and you do not wait for a process to exist in order to have this impact
• Flexible, adaptable mindset, open-minded: we try to solve a problem that has never been solved before. Multiple opinions exist on how to do so but nobody has the absolute truth until it is actually done: you know that and you embrace it, you are open to multiple perspectives
• Knowledge of systems engineering (requirements, FMEA) is a plus, or at least an interest for it, ex. software engineer with a “big picture” mindset
• Strong engineering team work skills: you are great at communicating engineering issues to teams with different backgrounds, you first take the time to understand a problem and the existing work prior before coming to a judgement (be it technical or not)

Nice to haves:

• Experience with Jama or a similar requirements management tool is a plus
