Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

The Structures team at Relativity is responsible for the design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing our launch vehicle integrated structures, as well as flight mechanisms. As a part of this team, you will be given hardware ownership for the full product lifecycle, and get the opportunity to conveniently validate your hardware through testing at our factory of the future, headquartered in Long Beach, CA. Unique to Relativity, you will get to work across many teams to leverage Relativity's first-of-its-kind 3D printing technology to develop world class integrated launch vehicles. Overall, this team is critical to the launch success of Terran 1 & Terran R, among many other firsts!

What you’ll do:

To support our mission of changing the way rockets are built and flown, you will be performing structural analysis of critical flight components such as stage Thrust Structure, Propellant Tanks, Interstage or Fairing to name a few.

Here are some examples of projects you could be working on:

  • Innovative conceptualization of load path and design guidance for complex structures
  • Review of static & dynamic load inputs, material properties & test as well as structural systems & subsystems requirements
  • Analysis and sizing of flight primary structures to ensure timely design reviews and drawing release
  • Support of hardware test campaigns with predictive and correlation analysis
  • Creation of automated design and analysis tools to improve the team’s efficiency
  • Resolve novel structural problems through analysis and test support
  • Build finite element models for use in static and dynamic simulations

Your mission will be to deliver these projects on time and budget. In order to achieve this, you will be working closely with our additive, design, test and loads & dynamics teams.

What you need to know:

In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who is self-motivated, thrives in ambiguity and is able to lead his or her own projects into completion. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast paced, aerospace environment, having completed difficult projects while collaborating effectively with other key groups.

On a day to day, you will be working with a few analysis software such as ANSA, FEMAP and/or ANSYS as well as performing hand calculations and basic CAD modeling in NX to support the analysis needs. Your designs and analysis will be optimized for our additive manufacturing methods, for which fundamental knowledge is crucial. You will also use your strong organizational skills to properly document your work.

  • 3+ years of experience in a full cycle design engineering role and a Bachelor’s degree in related discipline
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis and test (from hand calculations to advanced analysis)
  • Fundamental knowledge of metallic structures strength, stability and fatigue failure mechanisms
  • Proficiency in Nastran and a relevant pre/post-processor – NX Nastran preferred

Nice to haves but not required:

  • 5+ years of aerospace experience and an advance engineer degree
  • Fundamental knowledge of NX/TeamCenter
  • Experience using ABAQUS and/or ANSYS Mechanical
  • Experience with dynamic analysis e.g. for random vibration
