About the role:
We’re looking for an experienced Staff Vehicle Test Engineer to help lead our Vehicle Testing team at Cruise. Your work will help to ensure that the Cruise autonomous vehicle systems are meeting all reliability, safety and regulatory requirements while achieving an industry-leading level of performance.
As a team lead, you will work closely with multi-functional teams as well as external partners to develop and execute closed-course vehicle testing programs. You will provide technical leadership for a team of vehicle test engineers sharing your domain expertise to aid in team development. You will craft standardized process workflows and documentation for all phases of test development and execution including requirement reviews, test planning, test procedure generation, test execution management, results reporting and implementation of standard methodologies.
What you’ll be doing:
- Own the technical development, planning and execution of all closed-course autonomous vehicle testing
- Serve as a technical leader for the team, providing mentorship and guidance as needed
- Build Verification and Validation (V&V) plans for meeting functional and performance requirements of autonomous vehicles
- Create and maintain test strategy, test cases and test plans based on test scenarios and requirements; Define metrics, interfaces and develop test methods for vehicle testing
- Collaborate with project management teams to define the vehicle configuration, instrumentation and reserve test tracks
- Lead and improve processes to integrate issue resolution into company roadmaps and planning with a risk based approach. Develop clear dashboarding and critical issue pathways to ensure timely resolution of significant issues.
- Support multi-functional root causes analyses of sophisticated fleet-wide issues, affecting hardware, software, integration, and the vehicle system
- Perform hands-on problem solving alongside your team, becoming the domain specialist for all AV testing related activities
- Build scripts for vehicle data post processing and analysis
- Source and manage test instrumentation and testing equipment
What you must have:
- BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automotive, Industrial, or similar Engineering background
- 10+ years of experience related to systems testing in automotive, robotics, or similar industry
- Experience with AV / ADAS testing equipment and interface tools, i.e. 4A systems, AB Dynamics, OxTS, Applanix, Intrepid systems, Vector
- Experience with V&V framework - traceability from requirements to test case / test plan / test procedure development through test execution and results reporting
- Hand-on experience working with and debugging complex hardware and software systems
Bonus points!
- Programming skills for purposes of automated testing and data processing, i.e. scripting, Python, C++.
- Experience with robotics middleware and communication such as ROS
- Proficiency with Linux based operating systems
- Understanding of vehicle communication protocols (CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, Ethernet)
- Experience with autonomous driving compute systems, sensors and communication protocols
