Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this role, you'll:

  • Define autonomous driving behavior in ever increasingly complex environments
  • Work with the technical teams to deeply understand the problem space, leverage Waymo’s methodologies and pipelines to define and run relevant trade off studies
  • Capture optimum behaviors into clear and comprehensive requirements, and work hand in hand with the test engineer to measure performances
  • Monitor and report performance to ensure the safety and timeliness of future deployments and effectively communicate results to stakeholders
  • Help Waymo prioritize the right long-term solutions
  • Use your knowledge of complex hardware/software systems, systems engineering best practices, and program management to increase the speed and confidence with which Waymo develops and deploys new driving capabilities needed to advance the company’s business
  • Organize test and design reviews for senior stakeholders

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Relevant work experience in robotics, aerospace or automotive systems engineering
  • Advanced degree in a technical, quantitative, or finance-oriented field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Prior experience or training that indicates you have an interest in and capability to learn the technical skills needed to excel in the role

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Solid physics and software engineering fundamentals, and a graduate degree in a field directly related to delivering deep technical insights into the performance of complex systems.
  • An understanding of robotics perception, scene understanding, prediction, and planning algorithms and the real-world issues inherent in these domains.
  • High proficiency with structuring strategic analysis, developing analytical models, and telling stories using docs, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Excellent data analysis skills (e.g. using Python or MATLAB), including using large datasets.
  • The careful mindset required for safety-critical development, the ability to work quickly, and the judgement to balance those qualities.
  • Enjoy working across teams. Be able to lead others to solve technical problems even when you don’t manage them directly.

Note: The following is only applicable for roles hired in the US. As we keep the safety of our employees and our communities top of mind, COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be a critical prevention measure to help end the pandemic.  Because of this, Waymo requires all US-based employees who perform work onsite for Waymo to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are unable to be vaccinated, Waymo will provide a reasonable accommodation consistent with applicable law.
