Staff Incident Management Engineer

We are looking for a talented Staff Incident Management Engineer to work alongside our engineering and development teams to improve stability and reduce risk. As part of the Security team at Fastly, Incident Management Engineers drive the resiliency, speed, efficiency, scaling and security of both customer-facing and back-end systems.

Staff Incident Management Engineers lead wide-ranging efforts at Fastly to encourage best practices, and remove anti-patterns, from our company practices. If you can name three blameless ways to say “post-mortem,” this is the role for you.

This role is limited to non-US only.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as incident manager on call, responsible for coordinating Fastly’s response to acute outages and significant security events 
  • Leverage your technical expertise to engage appropriate SMEs and to direct incident response, with a focus on mitigation and service restoration
  • Bring your wealth of incident management experience to coach/mentor other team members
  • Conduct incident retrospectives and identify systemic patterns that contribute to production issues
  • Leverage incident retrospectives and other tools to drive improvements to the stability of Fastly services
  • Identify gaps in Fastly’s Incident Response Framework and develop new processes and training to address these gaps
  • Build processes to ensure that incident management practices, training protocols, and documentation remain in sync with each other and with Fastly’s Compliance and Business Continuity standards
  • Identify, advocate for, plan, and organize new projects and collaboration opportunities that will improve Fastly’s culture of response- within Engineering and across other orgs including Law, Compliance, External Comms, and more

What We're Looking For

  • Strong leadership skills to direct service teams during incidents that have the potential for significant business impact, remaining calm, professional, and focused in high-pressure situations
  • Experience as a developer or operator for distributed systems (hardware or virtualized); and participated in everyday maintenance and upgrades, as well as incident response
  • Broad knowledge of cloud infrastructure and decentralized environments
  • 3+ years of experience managing incidents as an incident commander (or equivalent emergency response role), and have trained or mentored people who are new to that role
  • 3+ years experience conducting blameless incident retrospectives 
  • You’ve planned and coordinated large-scale projects involving multiple teams or even multiple orgs: an architecture upgrade, migration, change control/change management implementation, or other significant organizational changes.
  • Experience working with ticketing systems (Jira, ServiceNow, Remedy, etc.) as a super-user
