We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join our royalties & reporting team (RoaR). The team works with large datasets of Spotify’s 100s of millions of users and billions of audio streams, delivering insights to external and internal stakeholders, and most importantly calculating payouts to Labels and Publishers.

As one of the most senior individual contributors on the team, you will work as a technical leader across squads, assume technical leadership of entire projects and champion technical and architectural excellence. You will grow the team by promoting sound engineering practices, drive work on technical strategy and roadmaps, regularly assess the technical state of teams, and advocate for best practices broadly.

You will embed with specific squads, give focused support and contribute hands-on on key projects. You will help ensure that our solutions are scalable, sustainable, and architecturally sound. You are expected to mentor other engineers to support them in their career growth.

This is a highly visible and rewarding role with the potential to make an immediate positive impact in an area directly involved in some of Spotify's top strategic initiatives. We are building systems to tackle problems that are unsolved in the industry. Important business stakeholders like Accounting, Legal & Licensing and Creator Marketplace all rely on us delivering something extra.

Who you are

  • You are an experienced technical leader with proven success in fast paced, agile software engineering teams.
  • You thrive on solving complex problems in an iterative fashion, delivering frequent tactical wins while making progress towards longer term strategic goals.
  • You have extensive architecture and development experience in more than one tier (data, backend, frontend etc.).
  • You are comfortable owning and driving systems all the way from business problem through concept and vision, design, architecture, iterative development and delivery.
  • You have strong coding skills (Java, Scala, Python etc.) and a deep understanding of system design, data structures, and algorithms.
  • You have extensive experience designing and building both highly reliable traditional back-end services & distributed data processing services
  • You have experience building and operating services in cloud environments, preferably GCP
  • You have strong communication skills, an ability to tailor communication style to different audiences, and to exercise good judgment in frequency and nature of communications to different parties (fellow engineers, stakeholders, senior management etc.).
  • You have a solid experience of working cross-functionally in an agile development environment.
  • You have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in a relatable field

What you'll do

  • Plan, architect, design, develop, deploy and operate backend data systems and services, working with some of the largest datasets at Spotify.
  • Assume technical ownership of entire projects, applications and services.
  • Champion technical and architectural excellence. Promote high standards in terms of adherence to best practices. Lead by example in terms of code consistency, performance, robustness, scalability, intuitive APIs and libraries, all of which are core tenets for our solutions.
  • Stay abreast of state of the art technology and engineering developments. Steer towards good tool and technology choices that both fit the problem at hand and aligns with long term visions and roadmaps.
  • Help shape and promote sound engineering practices and software development processes, within and across squads, in an agile, iterative, fail-fast environment.
  • Coach and mentor; perform peer code reviews and architectural reviews.
  • Partner with product owners to develop a deep understanding of stakeholder’s business problems, and translate to architectural and technical decisions.
  • Find ways to spread learning across the organization (give internal talks, write on internal blogs, etc)
  • You will be based in New York, but travel occasionally to Stockholm.

Where You'll Be:

  • We are a distributed workforce enabling our band members to find a work mode that is best for them!
  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas region in which we have a work location
  • Prefer an office to work from home instead? Not a problem! We have plenty of options for your working preferences. Find more information about our Work From Anywhere options here.
  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern Standard time zone for collaboration
