Sr Software Engineer - Uber AI Recommendations Platform, LocalGraph
About the role:
Partners with stakeholders and leads team efforts to build and maintain backend services and solutions to support user-facing products, downstream services, or infrastructure tools and platforms used across Uber.
About the Team:
If you want to work on large graphs or make an impact using Recommendations then LocalGraph is the team for you. We are part of the Uber AI Building Blocks group whose mission is to maximize ML/AI solutions (such as deep-learning, NLP, graph-learning, etc) and create personalization and recommendation solutions for Uber.
The LocalGraph team is building a scalable graph platform to power local commerce by connecting data from various Uber businesses such as Eats, Groceries, Maps, Rides, etc. The platform is being designed to handle large graphs for fast online serving and deriving intelligent insights about our users (drivers, eaters, restaurants, etc.). Our recent projects include building an e2e grocery recommendation/upsell solution, scalable materialized graph views, etc.
We focus on productionizing ML to improve end user experiences and drive the business. As a core offering, we are developing a platform around recommendation and personalization across Uber products. We strive to understand our riders, drivers, restaurants and build more personal experience across all users. As an engineer, you would be responsible for developing and deploying models that are high performant and can operate at high scale (imagine every Uber trip). You will deliver these solutions from inception to production.
What you will do on the Graph Team

  • Create backend systems & microservices that will recommend products to users across Uber's suite of businesses. These systems will be used by other services in various business contexts like Dish & Restaurant search, Eats feed, Uber Membership, Grocery Search and Up-sell, Place Recommendation, Ads, etc.
  • Construct & Coordinate reliable data pipelines (batch and real-time), schema frameworks, knowledge graphs, graph databases, query engines, and large-scale graph processing.
  • Help forge a predictions engine that capitalizes on graphs and other machine-learning solutions to support a wide variety of personalization and recommendations use cases.
  • Partner with product teams to analyze key business problems.
  • Collaborate with data science and engineering teams to integrate and validate machine learning solutions end-to-end.

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field OR 3-years full-time Software Engineering work experience, WHICH INCLUDES 2-years total technical software engineering experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  • Note the 2-years total of specialized software engineering experience may have been gained through education and full-time work experience, additional training, coursework, research, or similar (OR some combination of these). The years of specialized experience are not necessarily in addition to the years of Education & full-time work experience indicated.

Preferred:

  • Product engineering
  • Scalability engineering
  • Distributed systems
  • Strong programming and debugging skills
  • Joy of coding (we mainly use Go, Java & Python)
  • 3+ years of professional industry experience
  • Big Data & Microservices: Experience working with data at scale, including experience with some or all of the following: Hadoop (map-reduce), Spark, Hive, Kafka, Flink, SQL, Distributed Databases (e.g. HBase, Cassandra, etc), Redis.
  • Architectural chops: you should have informed opinions on constructing software systems and good knowledge of the principles of fault-tolerance, reliability, testing, and durability. You'll demonstrate the capacity to understand and evaluate tradeoffs between correctness, robustness, performance, space, and time.
  • Production Systems: Experience designing and deploying high-performance production services with robust monitoring and logging practices.
  • Processing Pipelines: Ability to build and interact with very large data processing pipelines, distributed data stores, and distributed file systems.
  • Fast learner: We're looking for software engineers who flourish while learning new technologies. You should be able to adapt easily to meet the needs of our substantial growth and constantly evolving business environment. You recognize that solutions vary with context.
  • Background in any of the following is a plus (but not a requirement): Knowledge Graphs, Graph Databases, Distributed Graph Processing, Graph Learning, etc.
