As the Sr. Solution Engineer (SE), you will collaborate with the Client Executive and various Sales Specialists to generate pipeline and grow transformational deals across a set of Enterprise accounts. You will be responsible for owning a cross-solution architecture that optimizes the value of the VMware portfolio to solve customers' business issues and further their strategic goals. You will own the technical piece of the sales cycle in partnership with your Client Executive. You will manage the technical relationship with your customers and facilitate collaboration with the extended team of technical experts available at VMware. The Solutions Engineer provides the communication framework and technical expertise necessary to collaborate strategically with the entire partner ecosystem to identify, develop, design, accelerate, and close deals. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
  • Execution:The primary objective of the Solution Engineer (SE) is have a 'CTO' mindset as the technical lead, peer to the Client Executive (CE), as part of the core account team with an Enterprise set of customers. You will own understanding the current state of the customers' business and technical architecture, educate them on our exciting technology innovation, and take them to a future state architecture through an on-going relationship. The core team is accountable for the entire VMware portfolio that includes compute, network, storage, security, datacenter management, and cloud services, along with packaged services, and educational offerings. This is a consultative role with the customer as you guide the overlay team of technical specialist to support our customers.
  • Passion: The SE enjoys building deep, consultative relationships with their customer, effectively becoming a trusted advisor. You understand the customer's high-level business objectives, and match these to VMware solutions to take the customer on a journey of digital transformation. Looking for someone who embraces a growth mindset, passionate about learning and sharing the technical advancements of VMware with our customers. The SE will be able to confidently lead high-level technology discussions to a variety of audiences and identify appropriate resources to further workstreams.
  • Integrity:Establish ethical working relationships with VMware specialist teams, sales leadership, professional services, leading VARs, Distributors, Corporate Resellers, OEMs, and Cloud/Hosting Partners. You will also establish and nurture relationships across the VMware community and contribute to a respectful and diverse culture of accountability.
  • Customer:The SE seeks to build deep, consultative relationships with their customer, effectively becoming a trusted advisor.Customer-centricbehaviors are essential for the SE as becoming a trusted advisor within your territory and provides the foundation for success at VMware. The SE shares VMware's value proposition, technologies, strategy, and product roadmaps to all levels at their customer including executives, technical management, and technical engineers. The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
  • Develop and nurture trusted relationships within the territory both internally and externally. The territory will be comprised of select enterprise accounts where VMware will be emphasizing consumption and outcome-focused selling including vision casting.
  • Understanding the sales process, pipeline, and agreed upon sales goals. Includes accurately capturing activities and working with the CE to achieve KPIs aligned to VMware's proven BMS.
  • Providing the technical knowledge to help customer understand how VMware can help them meet their business goals. Then, working with the team, document customer current state and develop an iterative future state architecture.
  • Continuous learning via pillar specialization, training plans, and workshops. Then taking that knowledge to design, develop and sell solutions built around the VMware portfolio to solve our Customer Business goals.
  • Coordinate with an internal set of multi-functional teams such as Client Execs, Product Specialists, Inside Reps, Field Marketing, Professional Services, and Channel Management and external partners as described previously.
  • As with most sales positions during covid, we have been able to use technology to work remotely and maintain our customer relationships. It is hard to predict the future, but as travel resumes, we will need the engineer to be in region to meet with their customers. Travel is around 25% and is mostly regional with occasional overnights for customer meetings, summits, and conferences.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This role is unique in that you are an influential leader as the core engineer. You are a technical leader for the customer as well as across the internal VMware extended technical team. Connecting the resources accordingly and serving the best interest of the customer and their business.

The team of peered engineers span a Great Lake territory that includes several Midwestern states and world class talent from all over the world. We all work together and help drive goal-oriented success and leverage the internal business management system to stay consistent. Our team is enabled to innovate and win together by helping navigate the unknown and lead the way to the cloud.

The leader of the team values transparency and promotes a culture of collaboration and teamwork. They have over 20 years' experience in technology, in a mix of customer and vendor roles, and have been with VMware over five years.

Where is this role located?

Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within a reasonable distance of the customers within the territory. Since this is sales, we have a reasonable expectation that you can visit customers as needed and you would work with your hiring manager on this expectation.
