Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. If you’re a software engineer or researcher who’s curious and passionate about Level 4 autonomous driving, we'd like to meet you.

The Perception team at Waymo develops cutting-edge technologies and machine learning models to enable our self-driving cars to make sense of the world. This requires detection, recognition, tracking and understanding of all relevant objects around the vehicle. It is vital to perform these tasks precisely for safe navigation in complex traffic scenarios, and so we rely on a diverse set of sensors including LIDARs, cameras and radars.

In this role, you’ll help to design and implement the shared perception data infrastructure that we use for both research and production. This infrastructure joins information from the car sensors, human labels, maps, and other sources of knowledge, transforming it in useful ways. The goal is a simple API that can run at the massive scale required to handle raw sensor information and that makes it easy to add new sources. You’ll be working with some of the largest ML data sets in the industry to support cutting edge research in areas like self supervised learning, curriculum learning, and large scale multi-modal multitask models.

Your role will include a combination of:

  • Designing and implementing shared data and modeling infrastructure
  • Optimizing ML training throughput, resource utilization, and research velocity
  • Collaborating with teams across Waymo perception and research
  • Building tools for automation

Minimum experience, skills, and attributes:

  • MS or equivalent work experience
  • Skilled at Python and C++
  • Experience working with ML models and modeling infrastructure
  • Experience shipping production software in a team environment

Preferred experience, skills, and attributes required for the position:

  • Experience with data processing
  • Experience working with autonomous vehicles
  • Experience working with ML perception

Note: The following is only applicable for roles hired in the US. As we keep the safety of our employees and our communities top of mind, COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be a critical prevention measure to help end the pandemic.  Because of this, Waymo requires all US-based employees who perform work onsite for Waymo to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are unable to be vaccinated, Waymo will provide a reasonable accommodation consistent with applicable law.
