Over the coming years, biotech will fundamentally rewrite the way we live. Gene editing and cell therapy are dramatically changing how we treat cancer and other major illnesses. Biofuels and biomaterials are transforming the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the makeup of everyday objects. Crop science and synthetic biology are producing sustainable and ethical food. Benchling’s mission is to accelerate the research that propels us towards this reality, and magnify its impact, through modern software.

Every day, scientists around the world use Benchling’s applications, platform, & analytics in their efforts to solve humanity’s most pressing problems. For these scientists, Benchling is the central technology they use to conduct their research. Our customers include pharmaceutical giants, leading biotechs, and the world’s most renowned research institutes.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling's intuitive, user-friendly platform ensures that research in the life sciences isn't held back by outdated and disconnected tools. With Benchling, individual scientists and entire laboratories can capitalize on their scientific potential. Best of all, the core platform is free for academics. We’re looking for engineers to iterate on the user experience of mission-critical workflows, build core product features to promote scientific collaboration within our community, and help make Benchling be more data-driven. You’ll also serve as a key input and thought leader, working closely with the product teams to drive growth and engagement of our academic user base, and help make Benchling the default platform for life sciences research.

If you are to graduate with your Bachelor's or Master's degree in class of 2021-2022, please consider applying to our Software Engineer, New Graduate position here.

YOU MIGHT WORK ON
Check out our engineering blog for some examples of past work. On this team, you’ll have the unique chance to work on a small, fast-moving team in a hypothesis-driven and iterative fashion, while building core product features. Here are some examples of recent and future projects:

  • Re-imagine the new user experience in Benchling: Benchling’s academic product is powerful, but also complex — just like the science that our users are doing. You will build the next version of our onboarding flow and the new user experience, which will help users get comfortable within our academic product and ultimately enable users to start their scientific research faster.
  • Encourage users to collaborate more within Benchling: The most cutting-edge scientific discoveries are often driven by collaboration in academia. In Benchling, academic users join organizations to collaborate on protocols, experiments, and sequences. We’ve begun to make it easier for users to discover organizations of other Benchling users. You will build out this and related product features to enable users to share data with their colleagues more easily.
  • Keep users engaged with our academic product: Academic users capture their scientific data in Benchling over multiple years, throughout the course of their Ph.D. or postdoctoral research. We want to ensure that users continuously derive value from Benchling, regardless of whether they remain in academia or if they transition to industry. You will build: guided experiences to help users discover new product features, improved invitation mechanisms so users can encourage more of their colleagues to join Benchling, and more meaningful in-product notifications to keep users up-to-date on relevant activity from their colleagues within Benchling.
  • Define and implement A/B testing and experimentation within our product to demonstrate how your work directly affects our users’ experience within our product.
  • Own the experimentation framework and help develop organization-wide best practices for running growth experiments within our products.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Engineering, Customer Experience, and Marketing to help define key metrics that will guide decisions on our product roadmap.
  • Design and build core product features that academic users need to accelerate their research, and stay engaged throughout their experimental lifecycle.
  • Help rapidly scale our product and team. As a founding member of the Growth engineering team, you'll play an integral role in helping us mature our engineering processes and accelerate our hiring pipeline.

ABOUT YOU

  • Have 4+ years of experience in software engineering, especially in full-stack software development
  • Have experience working on growth teams or experience in developing and releasing iterations of product features quickly in order to get user feedback more frequently
  • Have experience working with data scientists on designing and running A/B tests and experiments
  • Passionate about mentoring other engineers and sharing knowledge across engineering teams
  • Interest in learning more about life sciences (prior knowledge is not required; desire to learn is a must).

Nice to have:

  • Experience with SQL, as our data analytics stack is heavily based on Snowflake and PostgreSQL
  • Experience with experimentation frameworks such as LaunchDarkly or Optimizely

An Insider's view of Benchling

What’s the vibe like in the office?

I think that the company culture is at the center of everything we do. Every single person here is willing to put down what they're doing to support to their colleagues whenever needed. That’s what is particularly special about Benchling. People are always ready to give their best effort, and there's no shortage of laughter or camaraderie!

Madeleine

Customer Support Specialist

What does your typical day look like?

The mission driven culture defines our day to day in the "office" (or Zoom meetings/Slack messaging). I've never worked at a company where there's such a permeating sense of optimism. People are generous with their time and knowledge, but still remain humble. Also, Aloha Fridays keep our vibes in check.

Alex

Implementation Manager

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

One of the main reasons I joined Benchling is I knew I would grow along multiple axes. Benchling gives me the opportunity to explore outside of my role as an engineer. In the short time I've been here, I've had the opportunity to contribute to the company blog, help organize the annual hackathon, and manage part of the internship program!

Steven

Software Engineer

What unique initiatives do you have that encourage innovation?

I’m very excited by our COVID-19 initiatives. In an effort to help ramp up testing, we have partnered with universities and private companies to create a turn-key software solution that powers their sample analysis on Benchling. We’ve made it much faster for any lab that plans to spin up COVID-19 tests!

Nishant

Regional Lead, Professional Services

What projects are you most excited about?

As a co-lead of Benchling's People of Color affinity group, I'm most excited about projects and events that teach and celebrate multiple cultures. On Lunar New Year, our group passed out red envelopes. Many employees were familiar with the tradition, but they learned even more about its significance in Asian cultures from the information we shared.

University Recruiting Lead
