What are we building?
We're building a new Payments Platform for Northwestern Mutual(NM) - Enterprise Payments Network (EPN) using the latest technologies on AWS. NM is introducing more Embedded Financial products to provide more value to customers and help them meet their financial goals. EPN platform will have several of those components built along with payment solutions. We're a year into our journey and there's a lot of new capabilities we need you to help us build. Tech stack and dev tools we are using are Node.js, Typescript, Kafka, DynamoDB, Lambda, Kubernetes, Postman, Kevlar, Cucumber... And How about an opportunity to do the assessment based on our needs and choose the appropriate stack to build these new components? Whoever take up this position will have a chance to influence those decisions.
The EPN program has several agile-scrum teams that operate together as a part of a program organized using the Scaled Agile Frameworks (SAFe). On your scrum team there will be engineers holding roles as scrum master, devops, QA, and leads. There will also be a business analyst/product owner. We have a testing group outside the teams as well that help us coordinate and test the larger platform and integrating teams. There are also designers, architects, and program managers working outside the team to help build the runway of work coming to your team.
In-Person/Remote?
This position is a Milwaukee corporate office position. We are currently working entirely remotely due to covid. Until it's determined to be safe this position will remain as a remote position, with office time voluntary. As we've started thinking about what return to campus would be like we're going to go to a Tue/Wed/Thr in the office and Mon/Fri - locate for your day schedule.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops a robust understanding of the EPN, the APIs your team builds and supports, and the up/downstream systems interacting with the platform.
  • Builds, enhances, and supports those digital products alongside a scrum team, pairing as appropriate.
  • Work within a scrum team on new feature development or bug resolution.
  • Develop your own unit tests
  • Understands and can flex into QA tester roles as needed for the team
  • Participates and conducts code evaluations
  • Mentor for new devs and interns
  • Bring innovative ideas and solutions to business problems
  • Capable of designing solutions to feature-asks, understand how to write acceptance criteria for stories

  • Rotate in/out of ~7 scrum teams to learn other areas of the platform
  • Mentor new devs and interns
  • Take stretch design assignments for new capabilities

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong hands-on programming experience in the stack we are currently working on or any major programming language and patterns used to develop back-end applications.
  • Personal development projects and 1-3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrate a continuous learning mindset
  • Familiarity using continuous integration and deployment concepts
  • Familiarity with public cloud and associated technologies (AWS, Azure, Containerization)
  • Able to dissect problems, design solutions, break them down so yourself and a team can build them out.
  • Thrive in a team environment
  • Able to mentor new team members
  • Can communicate clearly to a variety of audiences, engineers, business, leaders, testers

You should definitely consider applying even if your experience is in a different tech stack but this role interests you. If you are good with a programming language and a framework, we strongly believe you will be able to learn other technologies faster.
