Job Description

Butterfly Network is looking for a hands-on Principal Transducer Engineer with a strong track record of delivering world class transducer module designs in high volume manufacturing environments. Our ideal candidate has a laser attention to detail, is excited about clever engineering designs, curious about why things work (or don’t) and wants to make insanely great products. 

To be successful in this role, you must be at the level of a senior technologist with strong analysis, design and leadership skills. You will be a lead technical resource in all areas of transducer hardware design such as transducer architecture, transducer component/material selection, transducer module construction, acoustic characterization, manufacturability, serviceability and reliability. You must be well versed in the core transducer engineering analytical skills in order to affect system level decisions and represent transducer engineering at cross-functional reviews. Your ability to productize designs in conjunction with cross-functional input from ASIC/MEMS Core Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Firmware, Imaging, Clinical, Verification/Reliability, Manufacturing and ID is also critical. Experience with building and leading teams is beneficial for long term organization and infrastructure development.

As part of our team, your core responsibilities will be: 

  • Develop and execute transducer designs for complex medical imaging systems backed by thorough engineering analysis.
  • Design & development of transducer module architecture leading to proof-of-concept and initial prototype hardware 
  • Bring-up, debug & validate designs for function and performance from concept through production.  
  • Thoroughly document and support each of above from concept to architecture, through manufacturing and use. 
  • Identify and scope projects around innovation opportunities as well as technology risks.
  • Lead interdisciplinary discussions between Hardware, Imaging, ASIC/MEMS, Reliability and Firmware teams to define and drive scope and clarity of work.
  • Assess and develop organization and infrastructure strategy for Transducer Engineering at Butterfly.
  • Perform a broad variety of tasks in support of the role and responsibilities for other Hardware Department duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Baseline skills/experiences/attributes:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Biomedical, Physics, Electrical, Mechanical or relevant field.
  • Software: Experience with Python, SQL,  SolidWorks, FEA (PZFlex/COMSOL/ANSYS)  
  • Prototyping: CNC, 3D printing, Laser cutting
  • 10+ years of experience in ultrasonic transducer development across full product life cycles - from concept to production including transducer module development, acoustic characterization and performance, process development, component selection, design for manufacturability, high reliability, and optimization for cost, power and performance.
  • 5+ years of product development experience in one or more of the following areas: Medical electronics, Consumer electronics, embedded systems or automotive electronics.
  • Strong Transducer Engineering fundamentals (acoustics, materials, process development, thermal design and modeling, beam forming, etc.)
  • Leadership skills involving resource management, organization health, strategic planning.  Comfortable and effective presenting to large and small groups.

Ideally, you also have these skills/experiences/attributes (but it’s ok if you don’t!):

  • Direct experience with MEMS ultrasound technology involving acoustic design, process development, thermal modeling and beamforming. 
  • Held direct responsibility for creation, arbitration and apportioning of transducer module technical requirements 
  • Expertise in simulation and analysis tools such as Matlab, Simulink, Labview, PZflex.
