Senior Tooling & Automation Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Tooling & Automation Engineer to join our Engineering & Quality team to assist with in-house tooling and automation design & development, sustaining actions of existing equipment, design reviews, implementation of industrial automation, and generation of engineering drawings for in-house use tooling and automation, and equipment qualifications.
You’ll report to The Engineering & Quality Manager and work from our Santa Ana, CA office and warehouses.
What You’ll Do:
Tooling design & development
- Design & develop manual tools for use in various process steps to improve quality and ease manufacturing
- Design & develop automated and semi-automated machinery to automate process steps, automate testing, and increase process consistency
- Develop drawings for parts and assemblies
- Lead machine and tool design projects with cross-functional teams including Quality, Manufacturing, and Product Management
- Lead design reviews with cross-functional teams
- Mentor team members on design and tooling approaches
Sustaining
- Perform tool and machine sustaining actions to stabilize and improve existing equipment
- Review and action machinery issues with Manufacturing Engineering and Production
- Evaluate tooling, parts, and equipment for performance characteristics
- Identify opportunities for machine and tool improvements
Testing
- Perform testing on prototypes and machines and generate associated reports
- Participate in machine and tool qualifications with Manufacturing Engineering and Production
- Perform other duties as assigned
Who You Are:
To perform the job successfully, the Senior Tooling & Automation Engineer should demonstrate the following:
- Hold a 4-year Mechanical, Manufacturing, or similar Engineering degree
- Understanding of engineering software tools, e.g. SolidWorks (or similar CAD tools)
- Several years’ experience in tool design and industrial automation
- Several years’ experience with pneumatic and electrical systems, including PLCs
- Several years’ experience with injection molding and ultrasonic welding is a plus
- Advanced Microsoft Excel or similar skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Able to work with a cross-functional team
- Takes direction well
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work in a deadline sensitive environment
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Extended periods of time in office and warehouse settings, both at Collector’s Universe and at vendors
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, e-mail correspondences, to receive ordinary information, and to prepare, inspect, and receive submissions.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 20lbs
- Working around equipment and machinery
- Occasional exposure to machinery noise from forklifts, injection presses, and other machinery
- Occasional exposure to warehouse temperatures and humidity
