At Northwestern Mutual, we are strong, innovative and growing. We invest in our people. We care and make a positive difference.
What's the role?
We are looking for a senior backend software engineer to help maintain critical existing data services, as well as deliver new capabilities for our backend platform that allows internal and external services and vendors to ingest people data.
We work with the vast breadth of tools and technologies to get the job done, such as AWS Cloud infrastructure and platform services, NodeJS and Go micro-services, and a robust CI/CD pipeline. As a senior engineer, you will work in an agile and innovative environment, solving complex problems and collaborating with business and engineering to deliver solutions!
What this role needs:

  • 4-5+ years of experience working with modern engineering tools, languages, and practices
  • Experience with developing clean, testable server-side applications including but not limited to RESTful APIs and event-based services. Ideally with Golang and/or Javascript/Typescript (Node.js)
  • A solid understanding of basic design patterns and architecture for microservices
  • Working knowledge of modern deployment and build tools and practices - CICD and DevOps
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git
  • Ability to perform peer reviews on code and design
  • Ability to translate business and technical requirements into solutions, as well as communicating technical requirements to both engineering peers and non-technical business clients

Further impress us with:

  • Strong Go/Golang background
  • Experience with DevOps and building out microservice architecture (using Dockerfiles, Kubernetes, Terraform)
  • Understanding and writing SQL
  • Strong understanding of data Integration patterns and tooling including ELT/ETL, EII, event-based architecture, and virtualization to support batch and real-time data needs

Ideal candidate:

  • Detailed and organized, curious and persistent - eager to find solutions to complex business needs, and not afraid to dig into issues and resolve problems
  • Self-motivated and driven. A teammate that effectively works well with other engineers, product owners, and non-technical roles. If there's a problem you can't solve, you know when and how to lean on your teammates
  • Strong sense of ownership and the drive to take on cross-team projects
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to explain and document technical solutions to both engineering peers and non-technical business clients

Grow your career with a best-in-class company that puts our client's interests at the center of all we do. Get started now!
