Senior Software Engineer, Visual Analysis
We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.
We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.
Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.
If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.
The Visual Analysis team works on a cutting edge web platform, Webviz, that visualizes what the AV (“autonomous vehicle”) sees and plans to do. Webviz is at the core of AV development and is used daily by the entire engineering organization. Webviz is also used by the marketing team to produce demo videos to show the world what the Cruise AV can do. In late 2018, we open-sourced Webviz, and it’s now actively used by robotics companies across the globe (Github). We’ve built Webviz primarily in React, WebGL and C++ (compiled to WASM).
What you’ll be doing:
- Designing and building next-generation technology for the future of Webviz. Some problem areas that we’re currently working on:
- Streaming gigabytes of data from the cloud to the browser quickly and efficiently
- Optimizing our message and graphics pipelines to render data blazingly fast
- Forging AV stack integrations so that engineers can trigger AV simulations directly from Webviz (more info on the role of simulations at Cruise can be found here)
- Visualizing AV behaviors in ways that can be immediately understood. E.g. what object was the AV reacting to in an unprotected left turn?
- Working closely with AV developers to engineer entirely new tools that they use every day to enable them to develop and understand the next generation of autonomy/robotics software
- Spearheading new product areas and think big about the future of AV development
- Driving collaboration with our open source partners across the world
What you must have:
- Experience building high quality consumer-facing products
- Familiarity with React or other web frontend frameworks
- Passionate about self-driving technology and its potential impact on the world
- BS, MS or PhD in CS, Math, Physics, or equivalent real-world experience
Bonus points!
- Experience writing modern production C++ applications
- Experience with game development
- Experience with WebAssembly (WASM) or graphics
- A background in robotics, ROS, or the AV industry
