Functions may include database architecture, engineering, design, optimization, security, and administration; as well as data modeling, big data development, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) development, storage engineering, data warehousing, data provisioning and other similar roles. Responsibilities may include Platform-as-a-Service and Cloud solution with a focus on data stores and associated eco systems. Duties may include management of design services, providing sizing and configuration assistance, ensuring strict data quality, and performing needs assessments. Analyzes current business practices, processes and procedures as well as identifying future business opportunities for leveraging data storage and retrieval system capabilities. Manages relationships with software and hardware vendors to understand the potential architectural impact of different vendor strategies and data acquisition. May design schemas, write SQL or other data markup scripting and helps to support development of Analytics and Applications that build on top of data. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build high performing and scalable data systems, applications, and data pipelines to process very large amounts of data from multiple sources
  • Develops services, controls, and reusable patterns that enable the team to deliver value safely, quickly, and sustainably in the public cloud and on prem
  • Collaborate on Big Data systems, and features within an Agile environment
  • Collaborate with cross-function teams of developers, senior architects, product managers, DevOps, and project managers
  • Deliver solutions that are devoid of significant security vulnerabilities
  • Foster high-performance, collaborative technical work resulting in high-quality output
  • Help convert current on prem ETL pipelines from ODI to cloud using azure data factory/data bricks
  • Help maintain current ODI and airflow processes
  • Help with production support rotation and help automate manual tasks
  • Excellent time management, communication, decision making, and presentation skills
  • Display a strong desire to achieve and attain high levels of both internal and external customer satisfaction

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Significant experience in cloud (preferable azure)
  • Significant experience and comfortable with production support (and willing to take on slots within our 24/7 support rotation)
  • Experience in using modern software engineering and product development tools including Agile / SAFE, Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, DevOps etc.
  • Expert at SQL
  • Proficiency with procedural SQL (particularly Oracle PL/SQL)
  • Proficiency with ETL processes and tools (e.g. Informatica, DataStage, ODI)
  • Proficiency with Unix/Linux environments
  • Accustomed to developing code in Git and using CI/CD practices


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare data experience, particularly in with healthcare claims
  • Engineering mindset when it comes to ETL processes
  • Automated testing of ETL pipelines
  • Championed or drove migration to repository based ETL or PL/SQL system
  • Developed a CI/CD for an ETL pipeline or PL/SQL based system
  • Authored Blameless Postmortems or Correction of Error processes
  • Implemented telemetry on ETL processes (e.g Prometheus/Grafana), and created effective alarms and dashboards
  • Implemented log indexing tools (e.g. ELK stack, Datadog, Splunk, Sumologic)
  • Positive attitude and easy to work with
  • Excellent communicator both verbally and written
  • Initiative-taker. Has grit and can solve problems without management oversight
  • High annoyance for manual tasks (coupled with the patience to actually fix them)
  • Takes ownership for work. When something goes wrong, stance is introspective rather than blaming

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
