Job Description

What’s the role?

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the PHP Ecosystem team. We are a brand-new team dedicated to shepherding all aspects of PHP development at Etsy by investing in core language support and related PHP tooling.

As the Senior Software Engineer you will be responsible for streamlining the PHP update process, increasing code quality in Etsy’s large PHP codebase, improving performance in development and production, and driving new features and functionality in PHP tooling. Do you find joy in identifying new coding patterns which lead to performance boosts and lower latency, nimbly jumping across a large codebase to resolve problems, catching and fixing bugs before they have user impact, and driving longer term projects with a view to improving developer experience? If so, this could be the perfect match.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager. For this role, we are considering candidates based in Mexico who are either remote, flex, or office-based. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more about our flexible work options and vaccination policy here.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Collaborate with distributed teammates in the US, Mexico and Ireland (including Rasmus Lerdorf, the original author of PHP!)
  • Establish and maintain practices and tooling to streamline how PHP updates are applied to development and production environments
  • Work closely with product and infrastructure teams to ensure that code running in production is of a high quality and follows industry standards
  • Enrich the functionality of in-house and open source tools for static analysis, debugging, testing, and profiling PHP applications
  • Define and implement methods and metrics for tracking success and growth within the PHP ecosystem
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Experience with maintaining and incrementally modernizing large codebases
  • Strong modern PHP knowledge, or similar familiarity with other languages coupled with a desire to learn PHP
  • Successful track record of creating, updating, and maintaining tools for developers
  • Ability to dig deeper into a large codebase to solve problems across multiple components
  • Proven track record of partnering across many teams to drive adoption of new technologies or practices
  • Experience contributing to scoping, planning and prioritization of large tracks of work
  • Familiarity with C and system internals, or a desire to learn
  • A history of open source contributions (or a strong desire to get started!)
  • Experience working in a cloud environment
