We are looking for a Senior Cloud / Data Engineer to join our growing team to build out a data platform in support of GRAIL’s commercial products and research activities.

You Will:

Be part of a highly collaborative team that focuses on delivering value to our internal partners by providing secure access to data
Work cross-functionally to translate business needs into efficient, scalable, and easy to maintain data engineering solutions
Prototype, implement, scale, and maintain our cloud data platform as we continue to bring in new data sources
Develop batch and streaming data extraction pipelines
Contribute to the design and execution of a data governance framework
Grow together with the team as we meet the next set of business needs and technical challenges

Your Background Should Include:

B.S. / M.S. in a quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology) with at least 5 years of related industry experience, or Ph.D. with at least 3 years of related industry experience
Experience in architecting and delivering secure, scalable cloud-based data warehouses and data lakes on AWS, Azure, or GCP
Knowledge in data warehousing architecture and concepts (ETL and ELT) and data modeling
Experience with relational databases, query authoring, and performance tuning
Solid object-oriented and/or functional programming experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferences Highly Considered:

Experience with AWS and data migration
Experience with Golang and Python
Experience with DevOps, e.g. CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployment, infrastructure as code, Terraform
Experience with data pipelining and workflow engines, e.g. Apache Airflow, Cadence, Beam, Spark
Experience building microservices and web applications
Experience with supporting data science/machine learning data pipelines

Principal Scientist, Computational Biology and Interpretation

A huge data set with an even bigger impact

“Cancer is a nasty, diverse disease that can affect widely different regions in the genome,” Principal Scientist Joerg Bredno said, and understanding how and why cells change isn’t easy. Luckily, his team works with more than 12 petabytes of molecular data — which translates to more than 1 million gigabytes — and a high-performance scientific computing environment that can handle analysis at that scale. With these tools, Bredno’s team is building an even larger training data set for the next generation of GRAIL’s early detection, multi-cancer screening test, slated to roll out this year.

It is rewarding that we can see, learn and share relevant insights from our data that so far doesn't exist anywhere else in the world in this form.

Ting Ma

A team united by passion, fueled by collaboration

GRAIL’s team sets lofty goals for its products, which require the unique talents and perspectives of every employee. Take one eight-month study that Associate Director Ting Ma worked on, parsing data from a GRAIL-sponsored clinical trial. Due to the volume of data, teamwork was imperative to define and implement clinical features, refine codes with robust test cases and tweak them as continuous feedback rolled in. The work is important, but that's not the only plus: “Cross-functional team collaboration is fun,” Ma said. “You get to learn so much while contributing to each project.”

GRAIL is taking on a challenge that is unprecedented. It can only become successful when people with different expertise collaborate deeply.

Ying Luan

Sharp talent, perpetually looking to learn more

There’s a reason top talent, like Associate Biostatistical Director Ying Luan, joins GRAIL. “Here, I knew I could have the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative analysis methodologies,” Luan said. She’s now working on a diagnostic aid project, planning and designing validation for clinical studies. It’s a new area for her, but there’s plenty of support for learning new skills at the company: With resources like LinkedIn Learning, workshops and conferences, she finds footing in the field, while diversity and inclusion trainings connect her fully to GRAIL’s culture.

Post-launch activities and payer’s reimbursement were new to me when I joined GRAIL. But now, I’m learning new things on a daily basis with different stakeholders in mind.

How does your team reward individual success?

People grow their skills both by learning how to rapidly build scalable software systems, but also by partnering with scientists and other domain experts to better understand, model, and envision the systems we will need. We enable and empower our engineers to lead this process and grow with our systems as they make the future of GRAIL a reality.

What projects are you most excited about?

GRAIL has a unique opportunity to scale our operations to add value with our early detection test. Our automation team works on the full spectrum of projects from low-level instrument investigations to overall architectures of processing facilities. I'm excited by projects that push the boundaries of lab automation, and that's what GRAIL is doing.

How do your team's ideas influence the company's direction?

The biological problem we're trying to solve is a complex machine learning problem with human lives at stake.
