The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

Working with VMware SEBU/SASE team, you will be engaged in cutting edge designing, implementation of SASE products. You will also be involved in white boarding, problem solving, troubleshooting cloud native SASE service including centralized policy management, Gateways encompassing Data & Control planes and distributed edge. Working in this team would give you the opportunity to participate in the full life cycle of software development - product design, technical design, implementation, testing, and CI/CD. You take full ownership of your product feature from start to end. VMware SASE team has a very inclusive and flexible culture which will let you lead and move across pillars to expand your breadth as well.

This is a full stack role with heavy focus on backend development, but you will also be responsible for front end UI design and development.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Within one month of employment, you should expect to ramp up on the technical stacks and set up your dev environment. Get familiarize with NodeJS, MySQL, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, and the dev tooling we use at VMware.
  • Within six months of employment, you should expect to dive into our code base and ship one feature in production.
  • Within a year of employment, you will have become a domain expert in the area you work on. Be able to troubleshoot production issues and navigate through our codebase. Be able to take full ownership of a project and drive from design to implementation. Be able to provide mentorship to new team members or junior members in the team.


The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:

  • Involve backend services and infrastructure development for the cloud platform
  • You will be using NodeJs, MySQL, ClickHouse for backend development
  • You will be developing your frontend code using Angular, JavaScript, Micro-frontend
  • You will need to learn or familiarize yourself with related AWS technologies such as EC2, S3, Secret management etc. as well as docker, Kubernetes
  • Assist with debugging and verification of defects in your own and others' work
  • As part of the job, you will be working with cloud native orchestrator platform team, security services team, UX team, and frontend dev team to work on new product features and to enhance existing features
  • Build new cloud native security services and integrate with existing SASE services and other third party eco system components using REST APIs
  • Build cloud first scalable software
  • You will work on JIRA and confluence, fixing bugs in software code and writing design know-how docs

The hiring manager for this role is Badhri Sampathkumar, a Senior Manager of Engineering, leading SD-WAN and SSE platform engineering teams in the SEBU SASE division. Badhri is a strong proponent of SaaS, cloud-native technologies and opensource. Sashi encourages his team to be agile, self-empowered to pick up complex problems and bring innovative solutions to the table together.

The team is distributed and works across different parts of the globe. Most of the team works in Palo Alto with folks also distributed in US.
