Job Description:
Position Summary
This role will partner with key leaders in Software Engineering, Core Technology Infrastructure (CTI) Engineering, and Technology Services roles to define objective reliability goals for the services they support, including observability designs specifying plans to gain operational visibility into meeting those goals through instrumentation and dashboards.

  • The individual in this role will consistently look for opportunities to improve the reliability and efficiency of operating our services, spending a considerable portion of their time utilizing their engineering skills to find automation solutions to manual support activities, along with influencing a culture that drives innovation and continuous improvement.
  • This individual will be engaged in major production triage efforts and work with problem management in the identification of root cause of highly impactful or complex issues as required.


  • This individual will use the knowledge gained in those efforts to partner closely with software developers, production services, architects and Infrastructure teams to drive delivery of sustainable and reusable design patterns supporting efficient production operation and to ensure non-functional production support requirements are adopted early in the application development lifecycle.


The resource will also be responsible for the following:

  • Collaborate with Development and Infrastructure teams to understand technical solutions and to develop Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) to measure and improve the reliability of the services they support.
  • Partner with Development and Infrastructure teams to create error budget policies which prioritize reliability stories and tasks when reliability objectives fall below a threshold defined in the established SLOs.
  • Develop software solutions and/or improved processes to address work identified as 'toil' by collaborating with key partners to identify, track and remediate these work processes as a means to free up time to focus on reliability.
  • Partner with infrastructure engineers and application development leads to suggest code optimizations and/or additional instrumentation and logging structures in the application or platforms to help gain visibility into the reliability of their applications and services.


Required Skills

  • 8+ years of experience in information technology Expert competencies: • Solution Design - Has demonstrated expertise in application/infrastructure/software design across multiple technologies, particularly cloud and container technologies, for complex, enterprise system. Can identify opportunities for technical training and coaching across the organization.
  • Application, Data & Infrastructure Architecture - Designs architectures for complex, enterprise systems using cloud and container technologies. Builds the business-technology relationship through aligning business goals and strategy with technology implementation.
  • Influences Decisions and Provides Leadership - Builds alliances with both internal and external stakeholders to gain support and buy-in on ideas and leads organizational and cultural change. Partners effectively with business stakeholders and leverages industry knowledge.
  • Innovation - Challenges conventional thinking and traditional ways of operating and invites stakeholders to identify issues and opportunities. Explores a wide range of possibilities and opportunities. Maintains balance between innovation and pragmatism.
  • Learns and Adapts - Demonstrates the ability to identify and synthesize technical and non-technical attributes associated with issues and potential solutions and recognizes the uncertainty related to dynamic or ambiguous elements. Teaches technical and non-technical staff how make contingency plans to handle obstacles
  • Analytical Thinking - Demonstrates ability to identify root causes to solve complex problems in highly unstable situations.
  • Achieves Sustainable Results - Uses data from KPI's to identify business opportunities (product innovation, cost reduction, process improvement). Advanced competencies:
  • Solution Delivery Process - Understands the roles and responsibilities of other teams who participate in the software/infrastructure lifecycles and engages as required.
  • Production Support - Has the knowledge and expertise of supporting production environments, and associated maintenance, change, control, incident and problem management.
  • Promotes Collaboration - Facilitates collaboration within and across teams. Go-to person for consultation from others. Proficient competencies:
  • DevOps Practices & Automation - Ability to perform or support continuous integration and deployment activities within their role. Understanding and has an appreciation for DevOps culture.
  • Governance & Stakeholder Management - Contributes to artifacts needed for governance forums. Understands stakeholder expectations and creates regular updates to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Risk Management - Understands risks and can apply the controls necessary to mitigate. Knows when to escalate risks. Always willing to identify, escalate and debate risks.
  • Financials & Resource Management - Ability to provide input for financial planning. Understands the variances.


Desired Skills

  • Business Products & Strategy - Basic awareness of products, services, business flows and strategy
  • Portfolio, Program & Project Management - Initial exposure and working knowledge of project management fundamentals, enterprise change management policies and standards, and lifecycle management (i.e., both Agile/Waterfall methodologies)
  • User Experience Design - Has a basic understanding of experience design principles and familiar with the bank brand and accessibility guidelines.
