Senior Robotics Software Engineer 3 (Smith & Nephew, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA): Multiple openings. Design, develop and test software for the current and next generation of devices for computer-assisted surgery and robotics. Read and understand software requirements and delivery quality software that meets the requirements. Review designs of team members, debug reported product issues and develop new features to existing products. Explore and incorporate new technologies to improve products and internal processes. Develop software used to perform orthopedic surgery more accurately and efficiently. Must be able and willing to travel up to 10% of the time.

Minimum Requirements:

Must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, Robotic Systems Development, or a related field and 4 years of experience in the job offered or related role in medical robotics industry OR a Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, Robotic Systems Development or a related field plus 1 year of experience in the job offered or related role in medical robotics industry.

Of the required experience, must have 4 years of experience if qualifying with a bachelor's degree or 1 year of experience if qualifying with a master's degree, in each of the following:

  • Designing and architecting large-scale, multi-threaded, real time robotic applications using C++
  • Developing in a Linux Operating System and command line programming


Of the required experience, must have 2 years of experience if qualifying with a bachelor's degree or 1 year of experience if qualifying with a master's degree, in each of the following:

  • Developing new features and new products using HIPAA complaint software development techniques
  • Designing UI/UX using UI toolkits such as QT and Open GL Graphics libraries
  • Programming device integration for time-critical inter-device communication (e.g. sockets, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth)
  • Manage and review documentation of designs
  • Computer vision/image processing algorithms for object tracking and understanding of 3D object localization and coordinate transforms
  • FDA medical device development regulation
  • Knee joint or hip anatomy structures, and implant structures and related medical procedures for joint replacement
  • Knee or hip replacement medical maneuvers and surgical workflow



Must be able and willing to travel up to 10% of the time.
